ESP32-GT-V1 prototype board. I’ve packed a lot into this one!
Built around the ESP32-S3 N16R8 with Wi-Fi, 16 MB of flash and 8 MB of PSRAM, this board is being developed for wireless ECU flashing, tuning, diagnostics and datalogging. The goal is to turn your phone or tablet into a live dashboard and tuning interface for supported ECUs.
Here’s what’s going into it:
• Two independent CAN/CAN-FD channels for ECU communication, diagnostics and logging.
• RS-232 serial for compatible Denso ECU applications, with RX, TX and dedicated connections reserved for FWE1, FWE2 and ECU RESET grouped together.
• K-line and L-line hardware for ISO9141/ISO14230 applications, plus LIN and RS-485 interfaces.
• CAN device simulation — MIMIC. I’ve already written firmware to observe CAN traffic and generate a device’s messages using configurable values, timing, counters and checksums. That means simulating supported sensors or modules for bench testing, troubleshooting and ECU development. You can also take the data stream from one CAN item and turn it into another thru a scalar. For instance, you can take the TPS and turn it into an accelerometer output but with limits or scaled to the TPS.
• Four external 0–5 V sensor inputs through a dedicated ADC.
• Three-axis accelerometer for motion and acceleration data.
• Spring-eject microSD socket for planned onboard logging and file storage.
• USB-C programming and data, USB and vehicle-power inputs, RGB status indication, and BOOT/RESET controls.
• JST CAN/power connectors and labeled side connections for straightforward wiring.
I’m building it to work with https://tuner.guruedgear.com for wireless tuning and flashing, along with AI-assisted BIN grafting to enable live data on supported ECU firmware.
This is still a prototype design: routing, firmware integration and hardware validation remain. Compatibility depends on the ECU and software support. OBD-II coverage is focused on CAN and K-line applications; J1850 is not included.
