Nine years ago today was probably one of my favorite builds. When the car has so much history and all with the same family since new.

This 1919 Dodge Roadster had been parked since 1939 when the motor blew. Seventy-five years later, I had the honor of bringing it back to life. Watching the owner ease it into the hangar felt like history smiled.

Look — and listen — to this beauty.
Nine years ago today, one of my customers took his family’s 1919 Dodge Roadster out for its very first drive since 1939 — the year his great-granddad blew the motor and parked it for good.

After sitting still for 75 years, I had the chance to bring this machine back to life. It took a lot of elbow grease, patience, and heart — but hearing that engine run again made every hour worth it.

Watching it roll back into the hangar that day… it felt like history came home.

Some stories — and some engines — are just too good to leave behind.

Listen to that rumble!

Nine years ago today, one of my customers took his family’s 1919 Dodge Roadster out for its first real drive since 1939 — the year his great-granddad blew the motor and parked it for what everyone thought was the last time.

This beauty sat untouched for 75 years before I had the opportunity to work on it . What came in was a time capsule — tired, worn, and quiet. But under all that dust was a story that deserved a second chance.

It took late nights, busted knuckles, designing, reworking it, and a whole lot of heart to bring her back — but man, hearing that engine breathe again? Watching the great-grandson drive it back into the hangar after all these years? That’s the kind of full-circle moment that makes it all worth it.

Some cars are more than just metal. Some builds carry a legacy. And some engines are just meant to run.

The 1961 international scout was a lot of, finding old damage that was just twisted and filled over. The damage on the driverside front fender started in the inner structure being bent and out of square to the rest of the body tub. Much loke the old saying the more you fix the more you find wrong. After straightening the front fender moved to the grill/headlight surround from the center to the driverside. The passenger mounted with no manipulation so was a great starting point. Once cut relieving the metal and straightening to gap with the hood the fender to to grill surround had a lot to say.

The was a well loved and worked piece of the customers family. What I always fascinate me about vehicles from the #60's is the dealer options like the custom rear bumper and and the way the spare tire rack moves with the tail gate. So after getting the frame done waiting for the engine to be finished up at the machine shop, I moved onto fitting the fenders, doors, tailgate, roof and the windsheild. You can see how far the fender and grill were ripped apart before the was parked.

After a full disassembly, good cleaning and finishing painting the frame, I started doing the same for the rest of her components. The recieved all new seals, hardware, brake lines, hoses, fuel lines and shocks. I went ahead and checked the lash on both axles and transmission/transfercase, before spaying them in rustconverter primer to help the high gloss engine temp enamel to last longer and stick better to those parts that was so grease saturated and no amount of hot soupy blasting would get it all to come out. This was the easy part for to say the scout was ran through the trees puddied up and sprayed just to do it again was an understatement. I will show you in the next post about this tough work horse.

So here is the starting point for the 61 that I did the lead removal video on. So I had started by cleaning the frame and found the motor was full of water about 2 years ago. Then we got started on th full frame off restoration back in February. Here are 10 of the 38 pictures I took for inventory and log history. Enjoy as I take you through the process as we wait on the engine to be machined and rebuilt.

The project is nearing completion. It passed the test drive, and now just waiting on the upholstery shop to confirm that wrapping the dash and door panels is a go. Once it's back from the upholstery shop, will test out the sport mode again, along with the AC and daily drivability.
