No.9 Coal Mine & Museum

No.9 Coal Mine & Museum The oldest, longest running, continuously operated coal mine in the world! 1855-1972 A visit inside No. 9 Mine is an experience that you will never forget!

Opened in 1855, No. 9 Coal Mine, located in Lansford, Pennsylvania is the
world's oldest continuously operated anthracite coal mine! Closed in 1972, the mine was re-opened as a heritage tourism attraction in 2002. Today visitors ride safely by train 1600 feet into the mountainside, to see and experience first hand what it was like for our fathers and grandfathers to work underground over the past

200 years. Once inside the mine, experienced tour guides will lead you on a walking tour filled with amazing sights and fascinating stories! See the underground mule-way; miner’s hospital, and the 900 – foot deep original elevator shaft, which once hauled loaded coal cars to the surface!

πŸ–€β›οΈ A New Piece of History on Display! β›οΈπŸ–€

Today, our volunteers and staff spent some time rearranging and adding another piece of anthracite coal mining history to a new location on the grounds at the No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum.

An old drag bucket has been placed on display and filled with coal, giving visitors a closer look at the massive equipment that helped shape our region's mining industry. It's a simple addition, but one that helps tell the story of the hard work, ingenuity, and determination of the miners who powered America.

Be sure to check it out on your next visit and snap a photo while you're here!

As always, we thank our dedicated volunteers and staff for helping preserve and share the rich mining heritage of the Panther Valley and surrounding coal region.
