Strengthen Your RV Suspension and Help Prevent Frame Damage

Over the years, we have inspected and repaired a large number of fifth wheels and travel trailers with cracked spring hangers, damaged suspension components, and I-beam frame failures. One common factor we often see is excessive frame flex during normal travel.

As RVs become heavier and owners travel more miles on a wider variety of road conditions, the stress placed on suspension mounting points continues to increase. Over time, that movement can contribute to cracked welds, damaged hangers, and even frame failures.

One upgrade we frequently recommend is the MORryde X-Factor Crossmember. This reinforcement system helps tie the suspension hangers together, reducing unwanted movement and adding strength to one of the most stressed areas of the chassis.

Discover the difference in exterior seals on this unit. One side features a black finish, while the other side has a white finish. See firsthand why paying attention to these details is crucial for a complete evaluation.

So what this tells you is that one side has been repaired at one time and the other side hasn’t. However, both sides of the unit are separated and need to be re-secured and re-sealed with Dicor non-sag and self leveling on the top.

Older RV leveling systems with bolt-on wings need torque checks every 6 months. Even stationary, walking inside causes movement. Rechecking torque is crucial. Some older manuals recommend fluid replacement every 5 years. We're now seeing failures due to lack of maintenance.

RV Awning Maintenance Tips

Your RV awning is exposed to sun, wind, rain, dirt, and debris every time you travel. A little preventative maintenance can help extend the life of the fabric, arms, springs, and motor components.

Basic RV Awning Maintenance Checklist:

* Inspect the awning fabric regularly for tears, holes, loose stitching, and mildew.
* Clean the fabric with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the material.
* Remove leaves, branches, and debris before retracting the awning.
* Check mounting brackets, arm hardware, and fasteners for looseness.
* Lubricate moving pivot points as recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid getting lubricant on the fabric.
* Inspect awning seals, roller tubes, and end caps for damage.
* Verify that any travel locks or restraint devices are functioning properly.
* Never store the awning wet for extended periods. Open it and allow it to dry as soon as possible.
* Watch for signs of fabric stretching, sagging, or pulling loose from the awning rail.
* Retract the awning during high winds, heavy rain, or when leaving the campsite unattended.

Common Signs Your Awning Needs Service:

* Fabric pulling out of the rail
* Bent or twisted arms
* Slow or uneven operation
* Excessive flapping in light wind
* Tears, dry rot, or UV damage
* Motor struggles to extend or retract
* Water pooling on the fabric

Regular inspections can help catch small issues before they turn into costly repairs or complete awning replacements.
