Zbroz has built another quick and dirty base for another avalanche snow monitoring station. We have built one for our local riding area here in Logan, UT, but this one is going up to Mark Staples into Island Park to help forecasting in that region.

Preload setting: again, it utilizes a clip-style system—it’s not threaded. You can turn it all you want and it won’t do anything; you have to actually pull down on the spring pack, and it will expose this little clip.

Personally, when I’m out on the trail, I like to just throw the sled on its side. Either with a buddy or by myself, I’ll pull down on the springs and move it one or two clip positions. Then I’ll flip it on its other side, pull down on it, and move it.

If you have a small screwdriver, sometimes that’s helpful. I’ve done it for so many years that I can just do it with my fingers now—I’ve kind of figured out the technique—but a little screwdriver is definitely helpful sometimes.
