"Tundra wheels fit a Tacoma, right? Same bolt pattern."

Sometimes. And when they don't, it's not the bolt pattern that stops you.

2022+ Tundra wheels bolt straight onto a 2024+ Tacoma. Same 6x139.7, same 95.1 mm hub bore, same M14 studs.

Put those same wheels on a 2016-2023 Tacoma and they won't even seat. That Tacoma's hub is 106.1 mm, 11 mm bigger than the wheel's center hole. And 2007-2021 Tundra wheels are 5x150, so they fit no Tacoma at all.

Dennis breaks down every generation pairing, the lug nut change, hub rings, and a 7-step check to run before you buy take-offs:

"It snowed up the hill last night. Can I get my studs on today?"

Hank has heard that one every fall since 1971. The answer has nothing to do with the weather. It depends on which state's pavement you're on.

Thirty states run a fixed calendar window, and an early storm doesn't open it. Washington and Oregon close March 31. California runs Nov 1 to April 30. Montana goes all the way to May 31. Eight states ban or tightly restrict studs, and the rule follows the road, not your plates.

Every state's window in one table, plus deadline extensions, the truck weight limits most people miss, and what leaving studs on into spring really costs:

Heading to the mountains this winter on all-terrains? Go look at your sidewall before you pack the truck.

Some all-terrain tires are genuinely good in snow. Some are barely better than a highway tire once the road packs down. Two things tell you which set you've got:

1. The three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. No snowflake, and the tire never passed a snow traction test.
2. Your tread depth. Below 6/32", snow grip falls off fast, and California and Colorado stop counting it as a snow tire at all.

One more thing most people don't know: that snowflake test only measures pulling away on packed snow. It doesn't test stopping, cornering, or ice. 4WD won't help you there either.

I put together a two-minute driveway check, plus a table to find the right tire for the winter you actually drive in:

Somebody quotes you $1,000 for four tires. Good deal or highway robbery?

Depends what you drive. On a sedan, $1,000 is premium money and should buy top-tier tires installed. On a 3/4-ton or a lifted truck on 35s, it's often not enough.

The one nobody talks about is load range. On a half-ton in 275/65R18, $1,000 covers about two out of three P-metric tire lines, but only about one in three LT Load Range E lines. Same truck, same budget, half the choices.

And if your truck came on P-metric tires and doesn't tow heavy, you may be paying for capacity you'll never use.

I broke it all down by vehicle, plus trucks, SUVs, and classic whitewalls:

Every "best tires for the money" list quotes one price per tire. That price is for one size.

I priced the same tire lines across every rim size they're built in, at the same overall tire height. The results surprised a lot of people here:

- Hankook Kinergy PT: $156.15 in 215/55R17, $284.99 in 235/40R19. Same car, same height, 83% more.
- General Altimax RT45 across the same sizes: only 28% more.
- On a three-row SUV, going from 18s to 20s added just 5 to 8%.

The variable nobody talks about is the sidewall. Keep a 50-series or taller sidewall and the bigger rim barely costs you. Drop into a low-profile, V-rated size and the price, the warranty, and sometimes even the load capacity all move against you.

My dad started out behind the counter of a Firestone store, and back then "where are tires made?" had a one-word answer: Akron.

Not anymore. Today South Carolina builds more tires than any other state, about 144,000 a day across 12 plants. But here's the part most lists miss: plant count doesn't tell you much. Oklahoma ranked second with just TWO plants, while Tennessee had six and built far less.

I put together the real map, ranked by how many tires each state can build in a day, plus where truck, off-road, and race tires come from, which plants have closed or are closing, and why Akron still builds the tires that run at Daytona and Indy.

Your last set of tires said "Made in USA." Your new set, same brand, same model, same size, says Mexico. Did something go wrong?

Nope. Tire companies assign production size by size, and when a plant closes or gets reassigned, the molds move. That's why a brand list can't tell you whether your tire is imported.

Dennis Feldman breaks down which brands have no U.S. plant in 2026, which "foreign" brands actually build here (Hankook, Toyo, Giti, Nokian), where most imported tires really come from (hint: it isn't China), and how to read the plant code on your sidewall in under a minute. Including the April 2025 change that older lookup charts miss.

What's the oldest tire brand? Depends which clock you read.

Continental: 1871, and still running under its founding name.
Michelin: business roots in 1832, but the Michelin name only dates to 1889.
BFGoodrich: 1870, America's oldest, and the first to build a U.S. pneumatic car tire in 1896.
Dunlop: 1889, the first company built around the pneumatic tire.

I also mapped who owns all those old names today. Spoiler: mostly not the families who started them.

Who actually makes vintage car tires? Here's something most folks never think about: the name on the sidewall usually isn't the factory that built it. Firestone and BFGoodrich vintage tires are built under license. So are Goodyear's collector tires. Michelin and Pirelli still build their own.

And some news from our shop. Earlier this year I bought Lucas Classic Tires, a name that goes back to 1957. Stan Lucas and I competed for decades, and before he passed he wanted me to take it over. Lucas keeps its name, and with it come Kontio WhitePaw whitewalls and our exclusive Autobahn bias-look radials.

I broke down who builds what, from Model A to muscle car to air-cooled VW:

Go crawl under your trailer and look at the inside edge of the tires. I'll wait.

Smooth inside wear on both tires of an axle? That axle is carrying more than it was built for. Trailer axles come with a slight upward arch so the wheels stand straight at rated load. Pile on more weight and the wheels lean in.

Wear on just one tire, or a sharp, feathered edge? Something's bent.

Hank Feldman walks through how to read the wear, weigh your axles, and fix the cause before you spend money on another set of tires.
