There are prepared people.
There are overprepared people.
And then there's Pete.
Pete drove all the way from Wisconsin to Colorado... in his own Audi RS3.
Not because he wanted to sightsee.
Because if our RS3 needed a part, his car was coming apart.
Read that again.
He willingly drove his own perfectly good RS3 across the country with the understanding that it might leave Colorado missing pieces if it helped keep ours on the mountain.
That's not sponsorship.
That's commitment.
Pete's attention to detail is second to none. Every adjustment had a reason. Every change had a purpose. Nothing was done because "that's how we've always done it." If there was an opportunity to make the car better, Pete was already thinking three steps ahead.
Of course, because race cars have an incredible sense of humor, the week didn't quite go according to plan.
'Murphy' never needed Pete's fuel pump.
Pete's RS3 did.
So, in what has to be one of the most motorsports sentences I've ever said, we pulled the fuel pump out of my RS3 so Pete could drive his RS3 home.
You can't make this stuff up.
Beyond all the engineering, data, and suspension knowledge, Pete brought something else to the team: confidence. When someone that capable looks at the car and says, "We've got this," everybody sleeps a little better.
Pete, thank you for believing in this project, for helping Murphy become everything he could be, and for reminding me that Wisconsinites take cheese, beer, and race car preparation with exactly the same level of seriousness.
The mountain may have had my name on the entry list, but people like you are the reason I made it to the start line.
