Maquoketa, Iowa: Another strong field of 116 race car drivers packed the infield on Oly's Grage of Preston night at the races on Saturday at the Maquoketa Speedway. An action-packed night of racing delighted the fans that saw the final checkered flag of the night wave at 9:30 pm.
The Not Quite Done Yet BBQ IMCA Hobby Stocks saw a strong field of 30 drivers check in for the race program and the officials of the Maquoketa Speedway made the decision not to leave any drivers in the infield come feature time. The drivers put on an outstanding feature race with only a couple very minor cautions slowing the action. The track was in exceptional condition on Saturday night allowing the drivers to race in packs with three and four wide racing witnessed throughout the main event. Leah Wroten battled to the front and emerged from the lead pack to lead several laps before 15-year-old Carson Butt made a late race charge to the front. The leaders took the white flag in a near dead heat and raced the final lap without either driver establishing an advantage. Carson Butt raced to the extreme bottom off of turn four and got to the checkers ahead of Wroten by a margin of .024 seconds.
The Eastern Iowa Overhead Door IMCA Modifieds raced all over the quick 1/4 mile as well on Saturday night. Spencer Diercks broke out of a pack of contenders using the middle groove and then set sail on the extreme high line to race on to the win in the 20 lap feature. Shane Paris advanced from a 4th row start and was able to close on Diercks but was not able to pose a serious threat in finishing second ahead of Jed Freiburger.
24 Drivers took the green for the Nelson Tire Recycling IMCA Stock Car feature, Casey Shelliam led early before the Miles family posed a threat to the leader. Jordan Miles raced passed his Dad Jerry on his way to the front. Jordan Miles went on to hold off a late race charge by Gage Neal in scoring the hard fought win.
The IMCA Sportmod feature was another thriller, as several drivers took their turns at the point position. Jordan Hicks took the lead from Jacob Arp late in the main event and went on to score the win for Double Cheese Motorsports. Hicks hit his marks perfectly in taking the win ahead of Arp and Jarrett Franzen.
Shawn McDermott became the third different feature winner driving the 1M Ford Focus in the McMahon Salvage Sport Compacts. McDermott took the win in the 12 lap feature ahead of Rob Harding and Rick Hemstead.
Ross Crist drove his Crown Vic to the feature win in the 12 lap race. Crist held off the constant challenges of Ethan Kammerude in scoring the win. A special match race was held after all the features were run pitting Sport Compacts against the Crown Vics with the top five feature finishers in each class being eligible to run. Ross Crist took the top honors in the winner take all event.
The Maquoketa Speedway will be off the next two Saturday nights, the next race will be KMAQ night at the races on Saturday, July 18th and will feature the return of the IMCA Late Models along with a full program of racing. Hot laps will take to the Maquoketa Speedway at 5:45 pm.
