1940 was the year Ford moved the shifter off the floor and onto the steering column. The payoff was more room across the front bench. It was also the first year Ford fitted sealed-beam headlights, and the last for the teardrop shape before the 1941 redesign.

This one keeps the shape and rewrites everything under it. A Blueprint 350 with aluminum heads and a Holley four-barrel runs through a 200-4R overdrive automatic, with a Mustang II front end, rack and pinion steering and power front discs doing the rest. Matte black over red vinyl, with air conditioning and power windows for the long way home.

1970 closed out the fourth-generation B-body Impala, and it did so without a performance badge. The SS option had been dropped after 1969, and the new Turbo-Jet 454 took over from the 427 on the order sheet. So the quickest full-size Chevy of the year wore no special trim at all. Understated by design.

This Phoenix convertible picks up that idea and modernizes it. It is a SEMA build running a fuel-injected 6.0L LS backed by a 4L60E automatic, with four-wheel discs and power steering underneath. Gibson exhaust, 20-inch Avant wheels, green over black leather, power top, Bluetooth audio. Classic shape, current hardware.

Ford's F-1 arrived in 1948 as the company's first truck engineered as a truck, not a pickup bed bolted to warmed-over car underpinnings. The cab came out of an early ergonomics study, and Ford's spending on the program earned it the Million Dollar Cab nickname. North of the border, the same truck wore Mercury badges as part of the M-Series.

This one keeps the Bonus Built shape and updates everything you touch. A 350 V8 with Holley Sniper EFI and Edelbrock breathing feeds a TH350 automatic, with four-wheel power disc brakes and power steering doing the hard work. Red over a gray cloth interior, air conditioning, power windows and 18-inch Ridler wheels under the short bed.

The Deluxe did not always have 13 windows. Through 1963 it carried 15, with wraparound corner glass bridging the gap between the side windows and a narrow tailgate. For 1964 Volkswagen widened the rear door, the corner windows disappeared, and the 13 window Deluxe arrived. By 1965 the largest engine on the order sheet was a 1,493cc flat four rated at 50 horsepower.

This one still wears its original colors, Sea Blue over gray cloth, with the factory panels in place. Out back is a 1776cc four, the well known big bore build, fed by dual Webers and paired with a 4-speed. Front discs and 14 inch wheels make it an easier bus to drive today.

When Packard's engine plant went away after 1956, Studebaker lost the 352 V8 that powered the first Golden Hawk. The fix was a McCulloch supercharger bolted to Studebaker's own 289, which matched the Packard's 275 horsepower in a lighter, better balanced package. Only 4,356 Golden Hawks left South Bend for 1957.

This one keeps the blown 289 and adds the hardware Studebaker never had. Fuel injection feeds it, a Tremec T5 five-speed sends the power back to a Dana 44, and front disc brakes handle the stopping. Gold over black vinyl, with power steering to make the whole thing easy to live with.

For 1970, GM finally scrapped its 400 cubic inch ceiling on intermediate cars, which is how the Chevelle got the 454. Less widely known: the SS 396 sitting next to it was no longer a 396. Chevrolet had taken it out to 402 and left the old badge alone, because the name was worth more than the math.

This tribute goes past both of them. A 502 big block breathes through Holley EFI and routes to a TREMEC TKO five speed, with a 3.90 geared 12 bolt Posi behind it. BMR suspension, power steering and four wheel power discs keep the whole thing honest, and the air conditioning means you can actually use it in Phoenix.
