This BMW N20 came in with a no-crank, no-start condition.
After disassembly, we found a failed timing chain guide and enough broken guide material in the oil pan to explain the problem. Further inspection revealed the timing chain had jumped 7 teeth.
As N20 engines accumulate mileage, timing chains can stretch and begin wearing on the plastic guides. Once those guides fail, the chain can jump timing, leading to anything from drivability concerns to a complete no-start condition.
Fortunately, this one avoided any valve-to-piston contact or internal engine damage. A new timing chain kit, oil pump chain kit, valve cover assembly, and oil pan gasket got it back on the road.
