Let's take a closer look at the 3.5L that headlined our lineup Friday. Arriving in 1969 the W111 280SE 3.5L was a revolution in styling, performance and luxury, paving the way for decades of S-Classes that would follow and separating the brand from its pre-WWII foundation. The 280SE sported the 3.5L M116 V8 which provided 200hp and a top speed of 130mph and made it the first post-war coupe with over 3 liters of displacement from Mercedes-Benz. Just over 4,500 of the 3.5Ls were produced during its short production run with the final vehicle rolling out of the factory in July of 1971. Auction prices vary widely but the best examples, often featuring a convertible top, reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
