We won Class B at Laguna Seca. On the back of a flatbed.

24 Hours Of Lemons : Twenty Ridiculous Years. The cars were picked out of an oil pan full of sockets! We only got in because another team dropped out. Then the Magic Rabbit went from 21st to 3rd overall, built a 9 lap Class B lead, and Nash ran a 1:57.2.

White flag. Turn 2. Passenger axle lets go.
Full course yellow, a flatbed, and one very slow victory lap through the Corkscrew. Still Class B winners, 4th overall, plus a Relax (just a fake Rolex) watch. Overall podium denied by one lap, zero regrets.

This is what peak 80s engineering sounds like. A straight-six that still rips to 6,400 rpm, thirsty for revs and sharp on the intake. The BMW E30 hasn’t aged a day.

The M20B25 was the backbone of the 325i. Light weight, efficient, just enough power to get the job done. Not flashy. Not complicated. Built to be driven—and abused.

Which is exactly what happened. For years, E30s were the backbone of 24 Hours of Lemons. Cheap to buy, cheap to fix, forgiving enough to survive long hours of three-shift abuse with minimum prep. You grabbed one off Craigslist for $500–1,500, bolted on some safety gear, and showed up with a cooler and a crew. The grid was thick with them. Everyone had an E30 because everyone could afford one.

That was years ago.
Around 2010, collectors woke up. The E30 M3 started climbing in value, and the regular six-cylinder models followed. Today, a tidy 325i is running $8,000–$12,000++ The E30 moved from disposable to precious.

It’s killer to still see these things battle! Who Spys something else? 🧐.
