Cold snaps produce more roadside calls than storms do. Weak batteries quit, low pressure lights come on, and everyone is already running late. Getting the battery tested now skips the whole morning.

Put a blanket, gloves, and a flashlight in the car before the weather turns. Waiting for a truck is a very different experience when it is forty degrees and dark out.

Myth Buster Friday: hazard lights help other drivers see you in heavy rain. While you are moving, they mostly cause confusion. Hazards hide your brake lights and turn signals, so nobody can tell what you are about to do, and in many states using them while driving is not legal. Slow down, use your low beams, and save the hazards for when you are actually stopped.

If you slide off into soft ground or a ditch, resist the urge to spin the tires. Digging in makes the recovery harder and can damage the drivetrain in the process. Stop, stay safe, and let a winch do the work it is built for.

Trivia Wednesday: when are deer-vehicle collisions most common? A) October through December, around dawn and dusk B) Midsummer, in the middle of the day C) There is no pattern to it. Guess below.

Rain, wet leaves, and early darkness are a rough combination. Stopping distances go up, visibility goes down, and everybody is still driving like it is July. Leave more room than feels necessary.

Save a roadside number in your phone before you need one. Standing on a dark shoulder comparing search results is the worst possible moment to decide who to trust with your vehicle.

Myth Buster Friday: all-wheel drive means you will not get stuck. All-wheel drive helps you get moving. It does not help you stop and it does not help you steer, and those are the two things that matter on wet leaves, ice, or soft ground. Plenty of what we winch out has power going to all four wheels.

Towing a low or lowered vehicle on the wrong equipment can do real damage on the way to the shop. When you call, say what you drive and what happened. Two sentences on the phone saves a lot of trouble at the scene.

Trivia Wednesday: for every 10 degree drop in outside temperature, about how much tire pressure do you lose? A) About 1 PSI B) About 5 PSI C) None, pressure does not change. Drop your answer below.
