Elon Musk says Tesla’s upcoming AI5 inference chip could deliver 2–3 times better performance per watt than Nvidia for vehicles and Optimus robots. He also claimed the chip could cost around 10% as much as an Nvidia chip, although these figures have not been independently verified.

Musk said he can visualize the chip’s entire physical design and has been personally involved in its development. The bigger challenge is manufacturing enough chips quickly, which is why Tesla and SpaceX are pursuing the large-scale Terafab project with Intel.

Terafab is intended to vertically integrate chip design, fabrication and advanced packaging, with a long-term goal of producing up to one terawatt of compute hardware annually. However, the project’s specific timelines and milestones have not been finalized, and Tesla and SpaceX still expect to source some chips from outside suppliers.
