⚠️ Sometimes the Most Important Diagnostic Decision Is Knowing When NOT to Proceed
Recently, a golf cart arrived at our shop from several hours away with a factory-installed LiFePO₄ battery that was completely non-responsive.
Our initial evaluation found:
🔹 Battery Management System (BMS) offline
🔹 No battery communication
🔹 Individual cell voltages measuring approximately 0.400V per cell
After reporting our findings, the OEM-authorized dealership requested that a battery recovery procedure be performed in an attempt to restore the battery.
After reviewing the battery condition, available technical data, and published lithium cell manufacturer specifications, we declined the recovery attempt.
Why?
Because diagnostics is more than simply following a procedure.
It’s evaluating the condition of the equipment and determining whether the potential risks outweigh the potential benefits.
When lithium cells have been discharged to only a few hundred millivolts per cell, important questions must be considered:
❓ Has irreversible cell damage occurred?
❓ How long have the cells remained in that condition?
❓ Will the battery provide reliable long-term service if recovered?
❓ What level of risk is being assumed by the customer and technician?
Every shop has its own standards and risk tolerance.
At PA Golf Cart World, our decisions are guided by testing, engineering principles, manufacturer specifications, and long-term customer reliability—not by assumptions, pressure, or hope.
Following our decision, the OEM-authorized dealership elected to transfer the cart to another authorized service location willing to perform the recovery procedure.
That was their decision to make.
And we respect it.
Just as we stand behind ours.
Our job is not to determine whether a battery can be forced back to life.
Our job is to determine whether doing so is the right decision based on the condition of the battery in front of us.
Sometimes the correct answer is not the most profitable answer.
Sometimes the correct answer means walking away from a repair opportunity when the data does not support the path forward.
That isn’t lost business.
That’s professional integrity.
