Paid a muffler shop $150 to fix a rattle. The new muffler still rattles, and now it's melting the bumper. Then he looked underneath

The shop welded sway bar end links onto the muffler and used them as exhaust hangers. Creative, sure. But it's the wrong part for the job, and it explains every problem he's having.

Why it doesn't work:
- A sway bar link has a ball joint on the end. It's designed to swivel, so the muffler can flop and bang around. That's your rattle
- Real exhaust hangers are a simple steel rod that slides into a rubber isolator. The rubber lets the exhaust move a little with the engine while keeping vibration and noise out of the car
- The link is the wrong length and angle, so the muffler isn't sitting where the factory hangers held it. That's why it ended up close enough to the bumper to melt it

What a proper fix looks like:
- Weld-on exhaust hanger rods. They cost a few bucks at any parts store, and any muffler shop has a box of them
- Position the muffler so it lines up with the original rubber hangers without being forced
- Leave plenty of space between the muffler and the bumper, with a heat shield if it's tight
- Replace the rubber isolators if they're cracked or stretched. Old rubber lets everything sag

Take it back and ask them to redo it with proper hangers. A shop that stands behind its work will make it right. If they argue, find another shop before that bumper turns into a bigger repair than the muffler ever was

Oil's below the low mark with 600 miles left until the next change. Add a quart or get it changed now?

Add oil now, today. Don't wait the 600 miles. Below the low mark means the engine has less oil than it needs to stay cooled and protected. The oil that's left gets worked harder, heats up more, and on hard turns or braking the pump can briefly suck air instead of oil.

You don't need a full oil change, you just need to top it off:
- Buy a quart of the same oil that's in there. The type is usually on the oil cap or in the owner's manual, something like 5W-20 or 0W-20
- On most cars, the space between the low and full marks is about one quart
- Add half the bottle, wait a few minutes, then recheck. Keep adding a little at a time until it reaches the full mark. Overfilling is a problem too
- Check it on level ground, with the engine off for at least 5 minutes so the oil drains back down

Then figure out why it's low:
- If the shop really didn't fill it all the way, that's on them. Next time, check the dipstick right after the change before you leave
- If it was full and you've lost a quart in about 2,400 miles, the engine might be burning or leaking oil. Look for drips under the car or blue smoke at startup
- Either way, check the dipstick every few fill-ups from now on. It takes 30 seconds and catches problems before they get expensive

Rounded off a 14mm bolt under a 2016 Altima? Here's how to get it out without making it worse

On this car, a 14mm bolt on the back of the oil pan right next to the exhaust is most likely the oil drain plug. That matters, because the oil pan is aluminum. Go easy on it, and have a drain pan ready, since oil is coming out the second it breaks loose.

What usually works, from easiest to last resort:
- A 6-point socket, not a 12-point. A 12-point is often what rounded it in the first place. A 6-point grabs the flats instead of the corners
- Tap a 13mm or 9/16" socket onto the rounded head with a hammer. It bites into the soft corners and gives you a fresh grip
- A bolt extractor socket, the kind with reverse spiral teeth inside. Tap it on and turn counterclockwise slow and steady
- Locking pliers clamped down hard, if you have enough room around the exhaust

What not to do:
- Don't use a torch. You're right next to an oil pan full of oil and a hot exhaust
- Don't hammer hard against the pan itself. Aluminum cracks
- Don't use an impact gun on it. If the threads in the pan are already weak, you'll strip them too

Once it's out, throw that plug away and put in a new one with a new washer. They're only a few bucks. Tighten it with a torque wrench to spec, not with all your strength. Over-tightening drain plugs is exactly how they get rounded and how pan threads get stripped

Failed state inspection because they claimed my brake pads were too worn… except they very obviously aren’t 😭
State law here requires a minimum of 1/16" pad thickness, and these clearly have more material left than that. This isn’t even the first time this has happened to me either — had a dealer try something similar years ago, and now Firestone is doing it too.
What really frustrates me is that most people would probably just panic and approve the repair because they need their car back. They quoted me $1200 for both axles.
Other than filing a complaint with the state, what would you guys do in this situation?

My gfriend swears I can keep driving with this belt… I’m not convinced 😭
She keeps saying “it’s not the timing belt, you’ll be fine” and thinks I can just keep doing errands around town like nothing’s wrong.
Meanwhile I’m looking at this thing thinking it feels sketchy as hell and wondering if my car is one bad day away from leaving me stranded.
Would you keep driving it or fix it ASAP?

Rotor screw is packed with hardened gunk… is drilling it out my only option? 😭
I already tried using a Phillips screwdriver and tapping it with a hammer, but whatever’s jammed in there is rock solid. This is a northeast car, so I’m guessing it’s a lovely mix of rust, road salt, brake dust, and years of neglect.
I do have an impact screwdriver with a #3 JIS bit (it’s a Honda), but I can’t get the bit to seat properly in the screw head.
Also worth mentioning: this is my first time doing brakes, and my tool collection is… pretty limited.
Any advice before I resort to drilling?

First time doing my own oil change… should I start panicking or is this normal? 😭
2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE, 2.0L 4-cyl.
I usually just take it wherever there’s a decent coupon, but I always pay for the premium oil service and stick to regular intervals — every 3 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Recently dropped a small fortune on tools so I could start learning to work on my own car. Did my first oil change today and everything went smoothly… until I noticed these flakes in the drain pan afterward.
For what it’s worth, the oil itself didn’t seem glittery or metallic — I only noticed these bits sitting in the top of the pan when I went back into the garage later.
No weird noises, no rough idle, no misfires — engine runs and sounds great.
So… is this normal debris, or should I start emotionally preparing my wallet?
