Ever wonder what is behind your bumper?

A lot of today's bumpers hide radar for blind spot monitors and pedestrian detection. We got a comment from someone who has done over 500 sensor bumpers with no issues, and that is a fair point. But here is the part that matters.

When paint is blended over a sensor area, the coating tapers down, almost like a prescription lens. That can distort the radar signal going out and coming back. It might work fine most of the time, but these systems also have to spot a child about to run into the street and warn you in time.

That is why we always follow the manufacturer's refinishing requirements on bumpers like this. It is about making sure the system sees what it needs to see.

Where is this industry headed?

The technology in cars is changing faster than ever, and keeping up is the hard part. We think the future is specialization: shops trained on certain makes, with the right parts, so repairs get done properly.

There are cars we will not work on because we are not trained on that brand. That is where we see it going.

How does Ken find time to shoot all these videos? Great question, and his honest answer is that he does not always have it.

Some videos get rushed, because finding time to sit and think beyond the everyday work in the shop is genuinely hard. But people have come to expect them, and the comments show there is real value in it for everybody, so he keeps going.

His secret is simple. He makes the time at night, while he is relaxing, thinking up ideas and researching what to explain next. It is working for now.

Looking for the repair rules on a Toyota or Lexus radar bumper and coming up empty?

A lot of people reached out after our Lexus bumper video because this information is not where most people look. It lives inside Toyota's information system under the Collision Repair tab, inside the collision repair manual rather than the service manual. That is where Toyota lists the radar radiation ranges, the measurements, and exactly what repairs are allowed in that area and what is not.

Ken walks through where to find it in today's video, because knowing where the manufacturer keeps this information is a big part of getting a repair done the right way.

Did you know the paint on your car can change how its safety sensors see the road?

Most people think paint is just about looks. But modern cars use radar to watch for pedestrians and help prevent accidents, and that radar has to see right through your bumper and the coating on it. If a repair puts the wrong coating in front of that sensor, the signal gets weaker, and even a small loss makes it harder for the car to tell a real person from background noise.

That is why proper refinishing is about safety, not just shine. Ken has been reading a new piece in Auto Body Repair Network by Troy Knopic from 3M on exactly this, and he will be breaking it down in more detail later this week. If your car was recently repaired and has these safety features, make sure the shop that painted it understands how this stuff works.

What happens to your car's safety features when the company behind them pulls the plug?

Consumer Reports wrote about the 3G shutdown, and here is the simple version. A lot of cars, some as new as 2019, ran their SOS and crash alert systems on 3G. Those networks are gone, so those safety systems in those cars simply stopped working. Now think about everything in a new car that runs on a subscription. Ken's own truck has Super Cruise on a subscription. So what happens in 10 or 15 years when the manufacturer stops supporting that software, the way computers lose support? Does the feature just die, or do they hand it over for free?

That is where Ken is coming from. Nobody thinks about this at the dealership. You pay for the feature, then you keep paying rent on it in a car you already own, and one day the company can retire it completely. Your car was just declared a total loss. Do you know how they came up with what it is worth?

Most total loss values today are set by software, not by someone standing in front of your car. That valuation report decides your payout, so the details in it really matter. If the condition of your car is rated wrong, or it gets compared to cars that are not actually for sale in your area, the number can come out off.

Why would your insurance total your car instead of fixing it?

Almost one in four cars in 2025 was declared a total loss, and we believe the real number is closer to 40 percent. Two reasons. The safety tech in new cars makes repairs expensive, since every camera and sensor has to be recalibrated. And wrecked cars are selling for crazy money at salvage auctions. So the insurer does the math, and totaling it costs them less than fixing it.

This is why we keep talking about total losses going up. It is not about how bad the damage looks. It is about the math behind it.
