One of our students from the last class asked a really important question: “What are some issues you run into on a daily basis???”
To be candid, in this first year of our relaunch, the biggest challenge has been getting parts consistently. That alone can throw off an entire schedule. My main focus for year one has been building a smooth workflow, so that even when parts arrive late or something unexpected comes up, the whole shop doesn’t grind to a halt.
As I’ve started to build a waiting list, that’s actually helped stabilize things. Having work lined up gives me some flexibility to keep projects moving instead of sitting around stuck on one missing piece. At the same time, being booked out means I can’t really offer much “special treatment” anymore. When you’re a one-person shop, you have to protect the schedule and treat every client’s time as equally valuable. If I start bending the rules for one person, it’s not fair to everyone else who’s been patiently waiting.
In business, especially in a small, hands-on operation like automotive upholstery, you’re constantly rearranging, adapting, and just keeping things moving forward. Some days it’s a puzzle of shifting jobs, parts, and timelines so that progress never stops.
Thank you again for such a thoughtful question. It’s this kind of curiosity about the real, everyday challenges that helps future trimmers understand what it truly takes to run a shop.
