EL NINO UPDATE: A very strong El Niño continues to evolve in the Pacific Ocean.

For those that don't know, El Niño is a natural climate pattern involving warmer-than-average water across the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. A “Super El Niño” is an informal term generally used when sea-surface temperatures in a key part of the Pacific reach at least 2°C above average.

Here are the potential impacts on Alabama:

WET: El Niño usually favors a more active southern storm track, increasing the odds of a wetter-than-average winter across the Deep South. That could mean more opportunities for heavy rain and localized flooding. This is the primary correlation and concern.

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are always a concern, but El Niño alone cannot tell us how active the severe-weather season will be. The Alabama tornado season runs from November through May; the past season was remarkably quiet. Highly doubt the coming season will be as calm.

COLD: Don't assume a strong El Niño means we won't have cold weather. Arctic air can still move into Alabama at times, and sharp temperature swings are possible.

Concerning snow and ice, as you all know winter weather is difficult to predict far in advance. A stormier pattern does not automatically mean more snow or ice. The temperature profile and track of each individual storm will determine what falls.

BOTTOM LINE: A wetter, stormier winter is the most likely impact, but seasonal climate patterns are not guarantees of specific weather events.

El Niño shifts the odds. It does not dictate our weather.

As always, we'll keep watching the data and communicating what it actually tells us. Long time followers know my style... no hype, no long-range predictions of individual storms — just sound meteorology.

Good morning everyone!

The wood yard may start looking a little different than usual. We have another product we will start to offer as we get the kinks worked out of our latest investment. We are currently not taking any lumber orders at this time.

Stay tuned!

TOMORROW NIGHT/SATURDAY MORNING: Scattered snow showers are possible across Alabama tomorrow night and Saturday morning as another surge of bitterly cold Arctic air rolls into the state.

Many places won't see a flake, but where the heavier snow showers develop there could be some light accumulation and icy spots on roads. Highest chance of this is across the northeast part of the state.

Most of the really significant snow will be east of Alabama over the eastern half of Georgia and the Carolinas. Accumulating snow is likely up the East Coast to Cape Cod and the coast of Maine.
