Two valves and one jug: how the antifreeze gets into your camper's water lines. 👀

Chris turns the water tank suction off and opens the bypass valve to the water pump. The suction hose goes into a jug of non-toxic RV/marine antifreeze. Never use automotive antifreeze. It's poisonous.

Before the pump goes on, open at least one faucet so the air has somewhere to go and the pump can prime. Then run the hot and cold at every fixture until antifreeze comes out.

Valves and pump locations vary by camper, so check your owner's manual.

1. Outdoor kitchens, outdoor showers and any outside fixtures you don't normally use. Skip them and they can freeze while the rest of the camper makes it through winter.
2. Drain traps. Chris pours at least one cup of antifreeze down each drain so the trap doesn't freeze. The toilet has no trap, so it's the one exception.

Cold. Bypass. Hot. The order Chris turns the three water heater bypass valves. 👀

When the air goes on to blow out the lines, it goes through the water heater first. Don't stand in front of it: water is coming out.

Then Chris bypasses the water heater on this three-valve system. Close the cold first, open the bypass second, close the hot third, so the whole system is blown out and bypassed.

There are also two-valve and one-valve systems, so check your RV or water heater manual for yours.

On this camper the winterizing valve and suction line sit under the bed. Normally the valve feeds the pump from the fresh tank. For winterizing, Chris turns it toward the suction hose, puts the hose in the antifreeze jug, opens a faucet and turns the pump on.

He does the cold side first, then the hot. Most trailers take 2–3 gallons.

Valves vary, so check your manual. How many jugs does your camper usually take?

Before you pull your camper's water heater plug, do this one thing first. 👀

Chris, one of our master technicians, opens the pressure and temperature relief valve before the plug comes out, so there's no pressure left in the water heater.

He also shows which wrench fits: 15/16-inch on this Atwood plug, 1-inch on the newer cap style, and 1 1/16-inch on a Suburban with an anode rod.

Let the heater cool and turn it off before you start. Once it's drained, close that relief valve again so it isn't open all winter and your water heater door shuts.
