π’ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: How to Safely Sell Your Junk Car in Alabama π’
Got an old, broken-down eyesore sitting in your driveway? Ready to turn that hunk of metal into quick cash? π°
At Andrews Auto Salvage, we want to help you clear out the clutter, but we also want to make sure you protect yourself! Not everyone buying junk cars plays by the rules.
Here is your quick guide on how to safely sell your scrap car and what red flags to look out for.
π οΈ What We Do (And What We Don't)
First things first:
We are a fully licensed, bonded, and insured auto salvage yard. * WE BUY: Scrap cars and junk vehicles meant for recycling and parts. We will gladly pay you a fair market scrap price based on its curb weight! RARELY DO WE BUY used cars with the intention to fix them up, rebuild them, or resell them as drivable vehicles. If it needs a mechanic and you are looking to sell it as a used fixer-upper, we aren't your buyers.
π The Rules on Titles & Liens
Before you sell a vehicle to anyone, make sure the paperwork is handled legally:
No Title? No Problem (If it's older!): Under Alabama law, a licensed yard can legally purchase vehicles that are 12 years or older without a title. Don't sweat the missing paperworkβour team can assist you with the proper state forms (note: a minor price adjustment applies for processing), have your VIN number available when you call for a quote.
Got a Lien? We Can't Touch It: We strictly cannot purchase any vehicle that has an active lien or outstanding loan against it. The vehicle must be fully paid off and clear of any financial holds.
β οΈ BEWARE of Unregulated "Cash for Cars" Buyers!
We urge our community to be incredibly weary of random buyers off Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or roadside signs who are not following Alabama regulations. Selling to an unlicensed, uninsured buyer can come back to haunt you.
Here are real examples of what can happen if you sell to an unregulated buyer:
The Ghost Title Scam: If you hand your car over to an unlicensed buyer without properly transferring the title through legal state channels, you are still legally responsible for that car. If they abandon it on the highway, it gets towed, or it's involved in a crime, the police and towing companies will come after you for the fines.
The Fake Rebuild: Unregulated buyers might tell you they are scrapping the car, but instead, they patch it up unsafely and flip it to an unsuspecting buyer. If the vehicle is involved in a major accident due to faulty parts, your name could still be tied to the vehicle's history.
The Bait-and-Switch: Unlicensed towers often quote you a high price over the phone, but once they hook your car to their truck, they claim it's worth less and refuse to drop it unless you accept a fraction of the cash.πΈ
Play It Safe. Sell to a Yard You Trust.
Selling to a legitimate, insured yard ensures your liability is legally ended the moment the vehicle leaves your hands.
