A 1955 Chieftain won a Goodguys award.

The judges didn't see what was coming.

They found out under the hood.

In 1955, Pontiac retired a 22-year-old straight-8 and introduced its first overhead valve V8 — the 287 CI Strato Streak. It was a landmark moment for the brand. The Chieftain was the car that carried it.

Motorworks of Spokane answered with something different. They built a 509 CI roller V8 with custom steel heads. An Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake feeds a Holley 850 cfm double pumper. Rated at 623 lb-ft of torque. Custom headers exit through 3-inch side exhaust with Flowmaster American Thunder mufflers. Custom engine and body mounts were fabricated specifically for this frame-off build.

Underneath, Fat Man Fabrication Stage III front suspension up front, TCI 4-link rear with Panhard bar and adjustable coilovers out back. Dutchman 9-inch rear end with 3.55 gears and 31-spline axles. Power steering and power brakes. Air conditioning and heated seats. Black leather interior with power doors and windows. Red and Black with flame graphics over smoothed one-piece bumpers and frenched halogen headlights.

Goodguys gave it an award. Pontiac Enthusiast put it in the magazine.

The 509 made the argument. The judges just agreed.

In 1963, Cadillac offered buyers of the Coupe DeVille 143 interior options — an all-time record for interior appointment choices at the time. The builder who added airbag suspension and custom paint to this one was simply continuing that philosophy.

The 1963 DeVille was a restyled car — bolder and longer than 1962, with the tailfins trimmed toward cleaner body lines. Body-side sculpturing was eliminated. Curved frameless side windows appeared. The factory was moving forward.

The 390 CI V-8 at 325 HP runs through an automatic. Aspen White exterior, black interior, airbag suspension, and custom sound complete the build — a specific set of decisions on a canvas Cadillac designed to be personalized.

If you sat behind the wheel of a Coupe DeVille in 1963, you already understood this was not a car that drove like everything else on the road. It was not trying to.

Cadillac built the DeVille to be the final word in American luxury. The builder who gave this one airbag suspension and custom paint understood that the conversation was still going.

Chevrolet built the Impala for the first time in 1958. The same design lasted exactly one year — the 1957 looked nothing like it, and the 1959 looked nothing like it either.

In 1958, the 348 CI Turbo-Thrust W-engine made its debut — Chevrolet's first big-block, available in four states of tune but not in the Corvette. The Impala carried the engine the sports car couldn't get.

This Aqua hardtop runs the 348 V-8 through an automatic with power steering and power brakes. The tri-tone interior carries the same Aqua into the cabin — built to feel like the inside matched the outside.

If you were at a Chevrolet showroom in 1958 and saw the Aqua hardtop with triple taillights on each fender, you already knew this was the one nobody could see above.

The 1958 Impala sat at the top of the Chevrolet line for one year and then became something else entirely. The design it wore that year has never come back.

A 1960 Ford Sunliner in Raven Black with blackwall tires and no brightwork is a car working hard not to be noticed. Ted Musgrave won the 2005 NASCAR Truck Series Championship and chose this for his garage.

NASCAR's origins trace back to moonshiners and rum runners who needed their cars to disappear into traffic. A sport built by men who valued going fast without being seen produced exactly this kind of driver.

Under the flat-black hood lives a HiPo 390 with 401 HP — Tri-Power carburetion, aluminum intake, and a solid lifter camshaft on factory cast iron headers. Outside: Raven Black, no stripe, no brightwork, blackwall tires on painted steel wheels.

If you saw this car on the street in 1960, you might have driven right past it. For a car with 401 HP, that took real commitment.

The people who understand what it means to build something fast enough to outrun anything and understated enough that nobody knows it's coming already know who this car was built for.

3,884 Challenger convertibles left the factory in 1970 — 5 percent of the year's production. This one never came back to a shop for paint, drivetrain work, or interior.

A broadcast sheet and a Dave Wise inspection report confirm what the build tag already says — Top Banana, black bumblebee stripe, matching-numbers 340 4-barrel at 275 HP and A727 SlapStik automatic. All original.

The A66 package added a sport hood, Rallye suspension, 11-inch brakes, and a 26-inch radiator. The 340 still wears its round twin-opening air cleaner with the pie-pan displacement callout. The exhaust manifolds are untouched.

If you were at a dealership in 1970 and saw Top Banana with black bumblebee stripes and a black convertible top at the curb, you know exactly what that combination said before the salesman opened his mouth.

The people who kept this car exactly as it left the factory made a choice that gets harder to explain every year. The paint and the broadcast sheet both tell the same story.

A rotisserie restoration completed in 2022 by Jim Drain puts this 1 of 39 TorqueFlite-equipped examples at 359 miles. The drivetrain is matching numbers.

The dual 4-barrel carburetors sit inline on the Street Hemi manifold — the only intake NHRA class rules allowed. The 90-pound Mopar super stock battery rides in the trunk for traction. No radio, no heater, no undercoating, no sound deadener — everything that didn't need to survive the quarter mile was removed.

If you know what NHRA Super Stock looked like in 1967, you already know what 55 cars — all white, all built on the same Sunday — meant to the teams that ordered them.

In 1959, the Impala became its own model for the first time — no longer a Bel Air trim option but Chevrolet's full-size flagship. Popular Mechanics compared the rear to the deck of an aircraft carrier. That was not a complaint.

The body-off rotisserie restoration carries a 495 HP LS3 backed by a 4L60E automatic, Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes, Vintage Air, and Dakota Digital gauges. The red interior runs into the trunk — a specific color decision for a car dressed in black.

The Marti Report, documented race photos, and magazine features confirm it. Dave Van Luke purchased this car from Max Curtis Inc. in Lansing, Michigan, and prepared it for the NHRA Super Stock class — where Ford's 427 FE engine was a consistent threat at divisional and national events.

The W-Code 427 with a single 4-barrel carburetor delivered 410 HP through an A833 4-speed to a 9-inch rear end. Ford's drag package deleted the sound deadener, relocated the battery to the trunk, and replaced the steel hood with fiberglass. Inside: bench seat, no options except a tachometer.

If you watched Super Stock eliminations in 1967, you knew which cars to pay attention to when a Fairlane 500 pulled to the line.

Pontiac sent a Tri-Power Bonneville convertible to pace the 1958 Indianapolis 500.
Only 3,096 convertibles were built that year. A fraction left the factory with Tri-Power.

In its first year as its own series, the Bonneville sat above the Chieftain, Super Chief, and Star Chief in Pontiac's lineup. Production was comparable to Corvette that year — each representing the limit of what its division could offer.

The 370 CI Tri-Power V-8 delivers 300 HP through a Hydra-Matic automatic. Frame-off restored with 320 miles since completion, it wears Kashmir Blue over white, with fender skirts, continental kit, and wide whitewalls. Inside: leather, Delco AM radio, spotlight mirror, and power steering, brakes, and top.

If you were anywhere near a Pontiac showroom in 1958 and saw Kashmir Blue with a white top at the curb, the Tri-Power badges told you the rest.

The sheet metal is all original 1962.
Everything else was rebuilt from the ground up over 9 years.

Bill Mitchell's team designed the 1962 Impala roofline to read like a convertible top from across a parking lot. It still works. What it covers now has nothing to do with 1962 — except the body it rides in.

A 6.2L/525 HP crate V-8 pairs with a 4L70E automatic and a Moser 9-inch rear end. RideTech air suspension with ShockWaves, Global West front A-arms, and a Baer 6-piston brake system handle the chassis. Inside: custom Scandinavian leather, Dakota Digital gauges, and Vintage Air. An owner-built polished stainless exhaust completes the build.

If you saw one of these in 1962 and knew what that roofline meant, you already know what it means to find one with the original body still intact.

9 years to build. Original sheet metal. 525 HP underneath. Someone decided the right way to honor a Bill Mitchell design was to leave the outside exactly as it was.
