If you’re hoping to snag a waterfront spot, national park site, or a full-hookup RV space, don’t wait until the week before and hope for the best.

A good rule of thumb:

Book popular campgrounds: 6 months out
Book national parks: as soon as reservations open
Book holiday weekends: 6–12 months out
Book local weekend trips: 1–3 months out
Book last-minute trips: stay flexible and check cancellations

The best trips usually start with one boring but important step: making the reservation.
