Today, June 12, Dan and Sally Wilder would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Dan and Sally were just 27 years old when they opened their first dealership. Over the next five decades, they built a business that consistently gave back to the community they loved — the Olympic Peninsula.
Dan was actively involved with the Washington State Auto Dealers Association and the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). Through that involvement, he met a very special gentleman, Bob P Mallon, a former NADA President and Ford dealer from Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Mallon is credited with creating the Ambassador Program through the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation.
Dan loved the idea behind the program — to invest in your community’s organizations — and wanted to be part of it. More importantly, he wanted his family to understand the importance of giving back. He often reminded them that none of their business success would have been possible without the support of the Olympic Peninsula community and the dedicated employees who make up the Wilder Auto family.
The Ambassador Program required a $10,000 donation to participate. In return, a charitable gift would be distributed back into the donor’s community every three years — in perpetuity — with the donor choosing the recipient organization.
Six members of the Wilder family became Ambassadors. Dan’s plan was to ensure every family member participated. Unfortunately, he passed away before seeing that goal fully realized.
After Bob Mallon passed away, the decision was made to end the Ambassador Program. Participants were given the option of receiving a final lump-sum distribution. While it was sad to see such a meaningful program come to a close, the Wilder family remains incredibly grateful for all it accomplished in our community.
In the final year of the program, each Wilder family Ambassador received approximately $16,000 to give to the community organization of their choice — an incredible return on the original $10,000 investment. Over the years, Ambassador funds helped support countless organizations and causes throughout the peninsula. What started as a gift became a lasting legacy of giving.
Dan’s legacy of leadership and service continues today. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dan Jr. was honored as Washington State Dealer of the Year and also served as President of the Washington State Auto Dealers Association. Together, Dan Jr. and his sister, Tami, have continued the family partnership and remain committed to giving back, just as Dan and Sally taught them.
Today, on what would have been Dan and Sally’s anniversary, we wanted to share how grateful we are to have been part of this extraordinary program. Thank you, Dan and Sally, for showing us that success is measured not only by what we build, but also by what we give back. ❤️
