An engine cut-off switch, often called a safety lanyard or ECOS, shuts off the engine if the operator is suddenly thrown away from the helm. That simple connection can prevent an unmanned boat from continuing under power and putting the operator, passengers, swimmers, and nearby boaters at risk.

Federal law requires operators of recreational powerboats under 26 feet, equipped with an engine cut-off switch, to use the switch link while the boat is operating on plane or above displacement speed. The rule generally applies to boats powered by 3 horsepower or more.
