This post is for the birds. And the lock.

We left Hastings pretty early at 0700 as the first and only lock of the day was near the end of our trip. For those behind us, for much of the southwest end of Rice Lake the vegetation reaches the surface. If it slowed us down it will likely slow down any boat not on plane. We made the turn to the north out of the lake and slowed to reverse the vegetation off the running gear. Our line cutters probably helped. Our day finished after we locked through the relatively small Scotts Mills Lock and got tied up in Peterborough after 33.6 miles in a little over 5 and a half hours.

We saw at least 2 eagles, 🦅 the one in the pic buzzed the bow before landing on the tree. Always great to see loons and we’ve seen quite a few.

Peterborough is a large town. Nearly 100k residents. Large grocery stores, marine supply and restaurants all walking distance but that’s not why we stopped.

We stoped here to visit the Peterborough Lift Lock before locking through tomorrow. It IS amazing. You can get there by walking about 1.5 miles, riding a bike or use the U ride app. We viewed the lock from above, below, and the lock tender Griffin provided a visit to the control room. It’s both simple and amazing simultaneously. The pics simply don’t do this 122 year old engineering fest justice. It’s highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. The pictures don’t do it justice.

Tomorrow they’ll raise up all 100,000lbs of us. I hope. 🤣

Another beautiful day. Campbellford to Hastings. A relatively easy 17+ nm run in a little under 4 and a half hours including 6 locks including the Healy Falls flight raising us up over 50 ft. There are bigger locks to come, it's quite quite impressive.

The waterway is varied including cottages, houses, rural settings, farmland and towns. Hastings is pretty small but the Captain's Table, family style restaurant is known for great fish and chips, which we enjoyed.

Dee decided to serve 12 Bean Soup, with fresh bread from Dooher's and a fresh brewed mint iced tea with mint delivered by Patti from Pirates Cove Marina, just before we got to Oswego. YUM!

Ed and Kyle, gold loopers dropped off more butter tarts and Kawartha Dairy Ice cream. more YUM!

We're going to leave early, with just one lock before our destination in Peterborough, we're going to get their a little bit earlier and head up to the lock to check out the one of a king hydraulic lift lock that opened in 1904. We get to transit the lock on Friday.

How perfect can a day really be? Hot but not too hot. Sunny. Dry. Quiet waterways. Open lock doors. What’s not to love. I guess it was a tad breezy this afternoon between a few lock. Of the horror.

We departed at 0900 from the wall above lock 6 in Frankford and were on our way for the 21nm trip to Campbellford. A leisurely 5 hours and 6 locks and we had completed another great day. This is all new water for everyone onboard, so each new waterway section, lock and view is novel and exciting. We arrived at our first lock at just after opening at 1000 to the doors creaking open and each successive lock was ready for us with friendly lock tenders to laugh at my silly jokes, like “thanks for ordering summer” and “you’ll make sure the weather is like this the entire way”

While I know we have some exciting locks to come, like THE Peterborough Lift Lock and THE Big Chute, the Ranney Falls flight of locks 11 and 12 didn’t disappoint. As you make the turn to port fighting the current pushing towards the port lock wall the size of the first chambers massive door reveals itself and then looms over you once you’ enter the chamber. You can see the water leaking through the doors a bit disconcertingly from the upper chamber. The large gates close behind you and all 100,000+ lbs of us smoothly rises the first step of about 25ft. The doors open and you slide into the next chamber. While the doors don’t seam as massive, you still rise more than 20 more feet for a total lift of 48 ft in what is a relatively small lock. Campbelllford lies just a few minutes up around the corner. We chose to dock in town to head to dinner ashore and visit some local shops and a bakery.

The Ranny lock was so amazing we had to head back down the trail from town about 1.5 miles to take peak from shore. Butter tarts and amazing pastries from Dooher’s Bakery at great prices was the reward for the leg stretching stroll to see the falls and lock.

Tomorrow will be an even shorter day with a later start. With the locks opening at 1000 and the next lock around the corner we’ll have another relaxed start and maybe a chance for an encore stop at Dooher’s.

Today was one of those nearly perfect days. Of course it started at cool, but we are in Canada, 🇨🇦 eh? But we started early at 0600 to get to the first lock at 1100. It warmed up as the day progressed. By the end of the day it seemed like the start of June brought summer with it. It’s almost as if we’re being rewarded for the rain and delays on the Erie / Oswego canals.

Darlene rewarded us with a delectable breakfast of deep dish blueberry French toast, hard boiled eggs, berries and melon.

We’ve never done the Trent Severn waterway so we didn’t know what to expect. With locks only open from 1000 to 1530p we wanted to make sure we made it through all 6 planned locks, hence the early departure from Picton for the 35nm or so run to the first lock. Even though lock crews are traveling with us, since it’s slow we had two crews. The crew who checked us in, and locked us through 1, went to lock 3, not 2. A different crew had the lock ready at 2, and met us at 4. The same for 5 and 6. Locks were open, ready and efficient. We traveled the entire 5nm ish at idle , locked through 6 locks with relative ease in a little over 2.5 hours including waiting for 15 min at lock, and getting checked in and paying for our mooring pass.

The water is noticeably cleaner. Cables on lock walls are easy to grab and well spaced and everything is a bit less muddy. Win!

Of course we sampled the local ice cream, enjoyed a walk, some time aboard, and took some drone footage.

With locks only opening from 1000 to 1530 we’ll depart at 0900 tomorrow to travel the hour to the first lock and transit 6 more up to Campbellford tomorrow.

We departed Oswego at 0 Dark 30, better known as 30 minutes before sunrise, when you can see...but the sun isn't quite yet peaking over the horizon. Sometimes it can be grey and dreary and other times the light is magical and warning. Today was one of those dreary days. Even though we had hoped to watch the sun rise over Lake Ontario, it wasn't meant to be. Either way the plan was to leave early and cross the lake before the predicted winds picked up this afternoon.

While we didn't get much of a sunrise through the clouds condition were very manageable. While it was a little lumpy at times, it wasn't bad at all. Knowing what the lakes can throw at you, it could have been much worse. By 0730 or so it was flattening out as we approached the protection of long point's south shore, and the admiral had put out hard boiled eggs and pastries, By 0820 we were in the lee of Long Point. From here all the way through Bay of Quinte and Adolphus Reach, it was calm as we cruised the coast lines which resembled Maine to us, but without the grit and smells that the tidal water that only the coast can provide.

Brunch was swerved at a very reasonable 1100 including warm bred like naan, scrambled farm fresh eggs and a sweet potato hash. The perfect way to warn your belly on a morning with a chill in the air.

We arrived in Picton Harbor a little after 1145, and once secured the first order of business was to check in. The office was un-manned so we called the number and checked in, over the phone. A relatively painless process. Once checked in, the first order of business was to get the pumpout we started in Oswego finished. Unfortunately they charged $25 a tank and while each tank isn't huge they charge by the tank. It doesn't make much sense to me as we could just as easily have one larger tank. Once we were pumped out and had filled out fresh water tanks, we slid over to the long boardwalk dock to spend the night. While this, and the other docks managed by the county are without power, the docks are new, beautiful and power will be installed as soon a they have permits.

While I don't believe a lot of loopers make the turn to port and stop in Picton before heading up to the Trent Severn, it is worthy of a stop. While the thousands islands is busy, with lots of boats, I would describe Picton as more sleepy. Fuel is less than $6.00 a gallon USD given the exchange rate today. A lot, but less than many places in the U.S. and the least expensive fuel we’ve heard about between here and Georgian Bay.

Picton is renowned for their "dining scene" with notable restaurants like Bacado (Tapas, yum, this was our choice and it was very very good), the Royal Hotel, Quaich and Banter, Theia and more. And of course, for those who are members of AGLICA (we are charter members) there is Slickers (artisan ice cream). Shops of all kind abound, but not the usual tourist Tshirt shops, but unique galleries, clothing and even high end resale.

Tomorrow we'll get up a bit later, but still early enough to run the 35 nautical miles to the first lock on the Trent Severn, and start locking up and through. If all goes well, by mid-afternoon we'll be in Frankford.

We did it! We finally got underway. After 4 extra, all be it wonderful, days of nice but sometimes cool weather at Pirate’s Cove Marina we dropped our lines about 0815 and slid away from the dock into a blustery and cold morning. The current was still running in excess of 1 knot pushing us along at a good clip. We locked through the first three locks on the Oswego Canal all by ourselves as we left late enough to allow the boats held up on the Phoenix Wall to get through, and have the locked turned and ready for us.

A few more largish (mid 50s) power boats caught us at Lock 5, making for quite a party of maneuvering in the wind tunnels the north winds created through locks 5 through 8. Everyone held their positions well.

We made it to Oswego before 1300, pulled up to the fuel dock, topped off our tanks before heading to Canada and pumped out half of one tank before their pump decided to have a mind of its own. After quite a while we gave up on the pump out, to try another day. Off to our slip (wall) for the night. We had other plans to fuel up in the Thousand Islands but the only sure thing about plans is that they change.

Tomorrow we’ll jump to Picton. Au Canada!🇨🇦
