Monday Motivation🦾🪝 It’s a new week but we’re dishing out the same standard. We show up, we figure it out and we get it done without the excuses. A few towing companies turned them down. The location was bad. The situation was dangerous. And getting the vehicle out wasn’t going to be easy. Then we got the call.

Our dispatcher sent CJ. Within half an hour, he was there. Ian joined him, and together they figured out how to safely get the job done.

“Our car broke down on a really bad spot down I-84, a few towing companies turned us down cause they weren’t sure they’d be able to help. The dispatcher sent CJ and within half an hour he was already there. Even tho it was a difficult and dangerous spot CJ and Ian were able to figure it out and get us out quickly and as safe as possible.

While I didn’t get to meet Ian, CJ was super friendly and helpful, he was professional and super quick at his job. We didn’t know if we’d be able to get out and somehow they got us out.

WHEN I-5 SAYS “NOT TODAY.” While I-5 southbound was already dealing with the planned closure this morning, northbound ramp on Marine drive decided to join the party. An overturned semi hauling scrap shut things down and left one serious mess to clean up. Truck on its side. Trailer over. Scrap scattered everywhere, including down below the roadway. This is exactly where heavy recovery gets complicated. It’s not just about putting a truck back on its wheels. You’re dealing with the tractor, the trailer, the load, debris, traffic, containment and getting the highway ramp opened again safely. 🦾🪝

🚨PORTLAND: THIS IS A BIG ONE. I-5 SOUTHBOUND CLOSES TONIGHT.

Starting tonight around 10 PM, I-5 southbound through the Rose Quarter will completely close for approximately FIVE WEEKS, with the closure currently expected to last through mid-October. This isn’t an overnight construction closure. It’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you travel through Portland, plan for it now.

➡️ Local southbound traffic: Expect to be routed toward I-405 and the Fremont Bridge.

➡️ Regional / through traffic: Consider using I-205 and avoiding the Rose Quarter altogether.

➡️ Give yourself extra time: Expect heavy congestion on I-405, I-84 and surrounding surface streets, especially during commute hours.

➡️ Don’t trust your normal routine: Check TripCheck or live navigation before leaving. Conditions and backups can change quickly.

➡️ Keep some fuel in the tank: Sitting in stop-and-go traffic burns more fuel than people realize. Don’t start your commute already sitting on empty.

And one more thing from the people who work alongside traffic every single day:

PAY ATTENTION.

Congestion means more sudden stops, more frustrated drivers, more crashes and more disabled vehicles. Put the phone down. Leave some room. Don’t block intersections trying to beat a light. If you see police, fire, EMS, highway workers or a tow truck working on the shoulder, slow down and move over. There is somebody standing a few feet away from thousands of pounds of moving traffic. If your vehicle breaks down and you can safely get it completely out of a travel lane, do it. Turn on your hazards and call for help. If you’re stuck in a dangerous location or blocking an active freeway lane, call 911. Northwestern Towing & Recovery will be operating throughout the closure and ready when Portland needs us. Portland is about to have five interesting weeks on the road. Plan ahead. Give yourself time. And look out for each other.🦾🪝

Life happens in a second, and around here, you never really know what the next call is going to be. It could be a technical rotator job that takes planning, precision and a whole lot of experience. It could be a classic car somebody has spent years taking care of. It could be a vehicle buried in the brush, a routine tow across town, or a crash scene where suddenly nothing about the day feels routine anymore. That’s this business. Some calls are challenging. Some are interesting. Some are rewarding. And some stick with you long after the truck is parked. But every one of them is a reminder that life moves fast. So do good work. Take care of your people. Be proud of what you do. Don’t put everything important off until “someday.” And when somebody is having one of the worst days of their life, remember that how you show up matters.

We’re proud of the equipment we run, but even more proud of the people behind it.

One year ago today, we lost one of our own. There are still moments when we expect to hear his voice. Nonstop stories that still start with his name. Lessons he taught that show up in the way we handle a difficult job. Memories that can make us laugh one minute and hit us square in the chest the next. Russell wasn’t just someone who helped manage drivers, trucks, calls, and the chaos that comes with this business. He was part of the heartbeat of this company and also helped shape the cultures in other companies before us. Russell was a leader, a friend, a mentor, and a man who left his fingerprints on the people around him. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting Russell, then you know! His soft spoken leadership and huge caring eyes were the definition of wisdom and genuine leadership. That is what a legacy really is. Legacy isn’t just a name carved into a stone. It’s the part of you that continues to live in everyone you left behind.
