National Safety Month hits real different in the Pacific Northwest. Around here, wet pavement, distracted driving, aggressive lane changes, and mountain traffic can turn dangerous fast. So this month, we’re asking our community to lock in and protect each other.

weekend is upon us, Portland. And with that comes heavier traffic, packed highways, busy campgrounds, and long drives across Oregon as families and friends head out to enjoy the long holiday weekend. If you’re towing a trailer to the coast, heading toward Mt. Hood, launching a boat, or simply navigating the city, try to take a few extra minutes before you hit the road:

• Check your tires & trailer connections
• Test your lights & brakes
• Give yourself extra travel time
• Slow down in heavy traffic zones
• Put the phone down and stay focused

🦾🪝 MOVE OVER. IT’S THE LAW. 🪝🚨

As we bring April to a close, it is critical to continue to honor Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and across Portland, Sandy, Gresham, and the entire Mt. Hood corridor, we’re asking every driver to lock in and pay attention. Because out here… this isn’t theory. This is real life, real risk, real death & real people standing inches from traffic. At Northwestern Towing, our crews operate daily on I-5, I-84, Highway 26, backroads through Sandy, and mountain routes toward Mt. Hood, in rain, darkness, congestion and chaos. We show up when things go wrong… and we stay in the danger zone until the job is done. All it takes is one distracted driver. One text. One scroll. One second.

That’s the difference between a safe recovery… and something far worse. Oregon Law (ORS 811.147) requires drivers to: Move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks. Slow down when changing lanes isn’t possible. Stay alert in active roadside work zones. This law exists because lives depend on it. Put the phone down! Slow it down! MOVE OVER!

Yesterday wasn’t about towing. It was about showing up when it matters most for our city. We stepped in and volunteered our time, equipment, and expertise to assist our city in the recovery of a vehicle from the Willamette River tied to a tragic incident involving multiple young individuals.

Working alongside local agencies, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), engineers and United Search Corps, this was a precision operation in extremely challenging conditions, low visibility, heavy sediment, and no room for error. After working side-by-side with city engineers to lock in the seawall’s capacity, we staged multiple heavy-duty rotators and carried out a precision recovery under full control. This is what real heavy-duty capability looks like. Not just horsepower… but discipline, control, and respect for the situation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families & friends affected by this tragedy.
