"I started at Purcell Tire & Rubber Company on January 5, 2005. I came here as a truck driver, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. Before Purcell, I was driving for another company. One Sunday, a friend of mine, whose son-in-law, Brian Hayes, was a manager of Purcell Tire at the time, called me. He asked me if I wanted a good job.

I told him, “I’ve got a good job.”
He said, “No, do you want a great job?”

He told me Brian needed a driver and that he thought I’d be a good fit. He asked me to stop by and talk to him. So, I did. After we talked for a bit, Brian asked me, “Can you start tomorrow?” I told him no. I wanted to put my two weeks in at my old job because they were good people and it was a good job. Brian understood and told me to call him if I could come any sooner. I put in my two weeks, and before they were up, my old company told me I could go ahead and leave for Purcell. So, I called Brian, and he sent me out on my first run. My first trip was to Iowa with Gene Williams. We had a great time, and that was the start of a whole lot of miles with Purcell. I started out running the Iowa and Minnesota route. After about six months, I started running Colorado, all the way to Wyoming, and through Nebraska. I did that for about two years before moving on to the Salt Lake route. I ran that route every other week all the way to Elko, Nevada, and did that for 10 years. Eventually, I got on the Florida route, and I really like it. They treat me like family out there. When I think about how things have changed since I started, most of the day-to-day work is still pretty much the same. The biggest difference is the routes and the people. There are a lot of different faces around Purcell than there were when I first started. One thing I do miss is getting to see Bob and Juanita as much as I used to. They were such a big part of the company and of my time here. Working with and for Purcell’s has been great. I’ve never had a job where someone takes care of you like they do. They’re like family, and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better. If you have a problem, they’ll fix it. That’s the kind of company Purcell has always been to me. And after all these years, some of my best memories are about the people I’ve gotten to know along the way. Bobby Veach is one that really stands out. He’s another truck driver, and we’ve always gotten along well. We’ve both spent a lot of time on these long routes, so we talk to each other all day long. There probably isn’t anybody else I talk to more.

After more than 21 years, I’ve driven a lot of miles and seen a lot of the country. I’ve had a lot of different routes, met a lot of good people, and made some friendships that have lasted along the way.

I came to Purcell because I was asked if I wanted a great job.

Twenty-one years later, I’d say, "Great, it is."

"I was hired in Little Rock in August of 1984 by Dennis Flynn, whom I worked very close with early on. Together we developed a lot of commercial and OTR business in the Arkansas market. In those years, I sold OTR tires and then had to mount them. Not much different from today. One interesting story was: one late summer afternoon I had mounted eight 1800-33 haul truck tires; a customer from 90 miles away needed two 992 loader tires that evening. Dennis was visiting the store and asked what I told him. I told him I would be there ASAP about 8:00 pm. Dennis responded, I’m going with you! As usual, nothing goes right when you need to, and a 3-4 hour job turned into a 6-hour job. Anyway, we got back to the store about 2:30 in the morning. I have never forgotten that evening together working and sweating and trying to figure out a way to get the job done. Hey, it’s Purcell Tire; that’s who we are. Lastly, I cannot describe in words the love I have for Bob and Juanita. They have treated me and some others I know as a son. Some of the heroes that influenced me in my career Dennis Flynn, Joe Jackson, Gene Williams, Brian Hayes, and Jim Carrow. There are others."

"I started working for Purcell Tire on May 11th, 1992. I was 22 years old! I remember it like it was yesterday, and boy has it gone by fast! I grew up in the small town of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and I wanted to be a firefighter. I had been working at a small tire store called Southern Arizona Tire, which was a Goodyear dealer, and then it became Western States Tire. When it sold to Western States, I decided to move to Phoenix to pursue my dream of becoming a firefighter, but that wasn't meant to be. I knew a guy from Gilbert, AZ, who worked for Purcell, so I called him when I moved up there, and he hired me over the phone to be a GS. I did that for about two years, and then he said, "Do you want to get in a boom truck?" I guess the rest is history. I have serviced OTR tires for almost all of my career, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I feel they are easier, and really, with all the technology on these new trucks, it's like playing a video game! You just grab the tire and put it where you need it. The rest is easy.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Bob and Juanita several times, and Juanita especially always stopped into the shop to say "hello" to everyone. I always appreciated that, and it truly does make Purcell feel like we're family.

I like what I do and it's such a good variety. I've had the opportunity to travel quite a bit doing OTR service calls and picking up equipment from all over the country and driving it back to various stores. I've gotten to work on NASCAR trailers and NHRA drag car trailers and tires. There have been so many different things I've experienced, and I'm truly grateful."

"On Friday, June 13, 2011, I walked into an interview at the Purcell Tire corporate office in Potosi, Mo. I got lucky that day because Juanita was recently back from an extended absence at the corporate office and in need of an assistant. As we were talking in the interview, the fact that I was previously employed by a law firm that belonged to a dear and trusted friend and attorney of theirs clinched the deal. She leaned over to me and said, "You're hired.”

I was very excited to work for Juanita and Bob because they were so busy, so active, and so business focused. They were on the go all the time, flying here and there, watching over stores, employees, inventories, accounts, you name it; they did it...and all while they made time to show up for the special things happening on the day-to-day, like celebrations of a birthday or milestone of a manager or a funeral visitation of a loved one of an employee. They planned fun and exciting managers' meetings at different locations each year so the managers could know each other and the company would operate more like a family. That’s what I’ve always called it. The Purcell Family. I am so lucky to be part of it."

As part of our recent 90th Anniversary Celebration, we paused to recognize the two people at the heart of the Purcell Tire story, Bob and Juanita Purcell. During the ceremony, the Purcell's received several gifts commemorating this milestone:

From Marketing Manager Elaina Chazelle Finch: A special "90 Stories for 90 Years" book featuring stories from the people who have helped make Purcell Tire what it is today.

From Amy DeClue on behalf of Representative Mike McGirl: A House Resolution recognizing and commemorating Purcell's 90th Anniversary.

From Matt Rieffanaug/Goodyear: A framed letter recognizing this incredible milestone and the longstanding relationship between Goodyear and Purcell Tire.

From Kevin McGrath/Michelin: A commemorative model truck presented in celebration of Purcell Tire's 90 years and the longstanding partnership between Michelin and Purcell.

This ceremony was a chance to honor our history, our people, our community, and the partnerships that have helped keep Purcell Tire moving forward. Most importantly, the ceremony was a chance to say thank you to Bob and Juanita for all their years of dedication, leadership, and belief in the people who make Purcell Tire what it is.

"I was working for a Wholesale tire company in Albuquerque. I had a close relationship with a customer who in turn had a close relationship with the store manager at Purcell. He told me that Purcell was looking for help and I should look into it. I looked Purcell up on the internet and read about the company’s history and how Purcell conducted business, It was easy to see that Purcell was a big company but somehow retained its "MA and PA " feel, now that I have worked for Purcell for 18.5 years I know why that is, Bob and Juanita truly care for their employee's, As I was going though the most difficult time in my life Jaunita and Bob took time out of their schedule many times to call me and check on me and my family, along with Roger Lucas they restored some of the faith I had lost in humanity, simply by showing concern, truly making me feel like family and not just a number on a line. I deal with so many other employees every day that feel the same way, as Purcell changes with the time I think and hope it always keeps it true roots, I am very happy to have been a part of the Purcell family for 18.5 years and look forward to being a part of the Purcell family until I retire."

"I just celebrated 11 years with Purcell, and I can't believe it's gone by so fast! My brother-in-law Scott Hernandez (he is our account manager at this location now) had started working here as a mechanic and he talked me into working at the store as well. I started in a service truck running service calls and they had me going all over Phoenix. I was eventually given the job of Boom Truck Tech and I really enjoyed it. I was having some trouble with the store manager at the time, and I was going to quit, but Barry talked me into staying and taking on the job with the BIG tires. I'm so glad I stayed! The big tires are so much easier to do, and I like it when I get to travel and see so many different areas of the state. I like going up north where it's a little cooler, and we get to see so many neat trucks and equipment. It's great! No two jobs are the same. People often ask how I do this job in the Phoenix heat, and I tell them I hardly notice it anymore. You just get out there and do it! Purcell has been a big part of my growth, and I really appreciate all the opportunities and the people I work with"

"I actually knew Bob Purcell long before I ever worked for Purcell Tire. Back in 1964, I worked at a gas station in De Soto, Missouri. At that time Purcell only had two stores; Washington, Mo and De Soto, Mo, and Bob would stop by this gas station every other night to fill up his one-ton truck.

In 1970, I bought my own truck and spent the next 15 years as an owner-operator. Those were some really good years. I was able to bring my family along sometimes, and we would turn a long haul into a little trip together. I had already put a million miles behind me before I did a run for Purcell in September 1985.

I came in just to do one trip to Denver and back for a driver who was out with an injury. The driver ended up not coming back, so they just had me keep running that route. Before I knew it, that became my route, and one trip turned into a career that’s lasted more than 40 years.

I kept my own truck parked in my yard for about two years after I started at Purcell. I guess part of me wasn’t ready to let it go. But after a while, I realized I knew where I wanted to be, so I sold it.

Not long after that, Walter Flatbush, who had been here for many years, asked me if I thought I could start running the Salt Lake City route. I told him, “That’s a piece of cake,” because I had already been driving routes to California and Ohio for years. I ran Salt Lake for about seven years.

When Purcell acquired Western States in 1992, my schedule changed. I’d run Salt Lake one week and Phoenix the next. Eventually they started sending me to California, and that’s been my regular route ever since, about 20 years now. I still drive that route at least every other week.

About 10 years ago, Purcell recognized me with a four-million-mile award. If I haven’t already hit five million miles, I’m getting pretty close.

Looking back, it’s hard to believe that filling in for a single Denver run turned into more than four decades on the road with Purcell Tire and nearly five million miles behind the wheel.

The trucks have been really good to me, and Purcell Tire has been especially good to me."
