HISTORIC SPEEDWAY HIDDEN NEAR DOWNTOWN: So many abandoned NASCAR tracks dot the landscape around Raleigh, ghosts from the 1950s when our city had potential to become central in NASCAR history.

But there is one that’s still roaring, stands full each weekend. It’s like stepping into another world — but it’s less than 15 minutes from downtown.

Daytona’s own Bill France, Sr. started multiple tracks around the area, including the Raleigh Speedway and Occoneechee Speedway – both of which have been long-abandoned and overtaken by nature.

The Wake County Speedway wasn’t founded by Bill France… but by local racing heroes Glenn and Marvin Simpkins. They built a dirt track on their family-owned land off Simpkins Road, near Lake Wheeler and Yates Mill.

Glenn had racing in his blood. He was flying around the Raleigh Speedway at only 14.

Today, the Wake County Speedway is a paved, NASCAR sanctioned track that’s survived since the 1960s. With so many of the Triangle’s NASCAR tracks lost to the ages, there’s still one track where you can feel the weight of North Carolina racing history — and it’s right here in Raleigh.
