💡 Check Engine Light On? Don't Panic... But Don't Ignore It!

That little yellow light on your dashboard can mean many different things. Sometimes it's something as simple as a loose gas cap. Other times, it's your vehicle telling you there's a problem that needs attention before it becomes a much more expensive repair.

Some of the most common causes include:

✔️ Loose or faulty gas cap
✔️ Engine misfire
✔️ Oxygen sensor failure
✔️ Spark plugs or ignition coil issues
✔️ Catalytic converter problems
✔️ Dirty throttle body
✔️ EVAP system leaks

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people assuming, "The car is still driving fine, so I'll deal with it later."

The truth is, many vehicles will continue to run even when the check engine light is on. That doesn't mean the problem isn't getting worse. Waiting too long can lead to reduced fuel economy, poor performance, additional component damage, and repairs that cost far more than they would have if caught early.

👨‍🔧 Ken's Tip:
If your check engine light is flashing, that's different from a steady light. A flashing light often indicates a severe engine misfire that can quickly damage your catalytic converter. If that's happening, it's best to avoid driving the vehicle and have it checked as soon as possible.

At Temstad Automotive, we'll diagnose the problem, explain exactly what we find, and help you understand your options. No pressure. Just honest answers and quality repairs.

"It's just a little squeak..."

We hear it all the time.

A customer recently came into Temstad Automotive because they noticed a slight squeak when applying the brakes. They almost decided to wait another month before having it checked.

We're glad they didn't.

During our inspection, we found the brake pads had worn to the point where they were beginning to contact the rotors. Fortunately, they came in before the situation became much more serious.

At Temstad Automotive, we replace brake pads and rotors together. We believe this is the safest and most reliable repair. Installing new brake pads on worn or damaged rotors can lead to uneven braking, excessive noise, premature wear, and reduced braking performance.

Waiting too long can also lead to much more expensive repairs.

As brake components continue to wear, the excessive heat generated by metal on metal contact can cause a brake caliper to seize. A frozen caliper can keep the brake applied, creating even more heat and damage.

Ignoring brake noise can lead to:
✔️ Frozen brake calipers
✔️ Damaged brake hoses
✔️ Overheated wheel bearings
✔️ Damage to the wheel hub
✔️ Premature tire wear
✔️ Reduced stopping ability
✔️ More costly repairs that could have been prevented

One of the biggest misconceptions is that a slight squeak is "no big deal."

In reality, your vehicle is trying to tell you something.

The sooner you address a brake concern, the more likely you are to avoid additional damage and unnecessary expense.

At Temstad Automotive, we don't believe in cutting corners. We believe in repairing your vehicle the right way, using quality parts, and making recommendations that keep you and your family safe.

Why could your car fail a New York State Inspection?

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is, "My car runs fine, so it should pass inspection."

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

New York State inspections are designed to ensure your vehicle meets minimum safety standards. As a New York State Certified Inspection Station, we don't make the rules—we simply follow the inspection requirements established by New York State.

Some common reasons a vehicle may fail include:

✅ Worn brakes
✅ Tires with insufficient tread or damage
✅ Suspension or steering concerns
✅ Check engine light (on most 1996 and newer vehicles)
✅ Faulty lights or turn signals
✅ Worn windshield wipers
✅ Exhaust leaks
✅ Rust or corrosion affecting safety
✅ Leaking components that create a safety concern, such as brake or axle leaks

At Temstad Automotive, our goal is never to "find something wrong." Our responsibility is to inspect every vehicle honestly, explain what we find, and help keep you and your family safe on the road.

If you're ever unsure about your vehicle or have questions about New York State inspections, we're always happy to explain what we're seeing and why.

💜 Woman Owned Wednesday 💜

Temstad is more than an auto repair shop. It is a family legacy built on trust, honesty, and doing right by people.

When I took over ownership, I made a promise to continue the values that have always been at the heart of Temstad. Treat people with respect, provide quality repairs, and always be honest about what their vehicle needs.

I know how important it is to have a repair shop you can trust. That is why we take the time to explain repairs, answer questions, and help our customers feel confident about the decisions they make for their vehicles.

Every day I am grateful for the customers who choose to support our small business. Your trust, loyalty, and referrals mean the world to our family.

Thank you for allowing us to continue a tradition of caring for our customers and our community. We are proud to be a woman owned business, a family business, and a part of Rochester.
