It’s done!

Here we have a full demo of how well this Stern platform works on this Passport.

Sometimes the simplest forms of accomplishing something are the best, in this case a pair of 3:1 block and tackles with cam cleats, lashed to the stern rail is all that it takes to raise and lower this beautiful creation.

Yes, it is possible to fold it down from being in the water if you fall overboard.

Beautiful, strong, and highly functional.

Quick update on the Leopard 48 project.

The first couple of videos you’ve seen were actually filmed about five weeks ago when my wife and I flew up to Charleston to look at the boat for the first time and decide whether or not we wanted to take on this project.

Well… we did it.

We’ve officially closed on the boat, and I’m sitting outside her right now getting ready to start what will probably be a very long cleanup and restoration process.

My wife and kids are on their way over, and today is really about taking inventory, cleaning out years of neglect, and starting to figure out exactly what we’re dealing with.

One thing I plan to do throughout this project is document the actual costs associated with bringing a boat like this back to life. I think a lot of people are curious what these projects really cost, and honestly, there aren’t many people who openly share the numbers.

We’ll track the repairs, upgrades, unexpected surprises, and hopefully show what it really takes to take a neglected cruising catamaran and turn her back into a capable cruising boat.

We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.

Before we start tearing into her, take a guess in the comments. What do you think it’ll cost to get this boat back to cruising condition?

Let’s get started.

Here’s the latest update on the Passport 515 lifting stern platform project.

Fab team knocking it out of the park again with this one!

We will post a video showing it in operation shortly…

There are a lot of complex moving parts to a project like this, the metal fabrication, cutting the deck boards to fit, matching the deck board color to the existing wood on board, rigging it so that it’s functional and able to deploy in the event of falling overboard, and of course, making it look good!

Boom repair. Video 2.
This client had an accidental gybe that sheared off the vang bracket.
The previous bracket was just surface welded to the boom, so we are beefing up the design.
The bracket is now inserted into a slot in the boom, so that it is loading up a much larger surface area, and then we are adding a doubler plate to the exterior to further strengthen this area.
Of course, the next step after this will be repainting so it all looks good as new again.

Most people have no idea what it costs to repair or upgrade a cruising catamaran.

We see it all the time at The Yacht Rigger.

Yes, marine contractors charge fairly high hourly rates. (You should see our insurance premiums.)

Yes, boat parts are expensive.

And yes, everything takes longer than you think it will.

As someone who specializes in this field, I’m in a fairly unique position to have a good understanding of what these repairs and upgrades are likely to cost, along with the surprises that inevitably show up along the way.

Even so, if we buy this boat at a significantly discounted price, it’s still going to be a very expensive and time-consuming project to get her fully upgraded and back to true cruising-ready condition.

Don’t worry, the usual content from The Yacht Rigger isn’t going anywhere, but we’re definitely going to keep everyone in the loop as this project unfolds.

If we move forward with this purchase, it will involve rigging, fiberglass, electrical, electronics, HVAC… pretty much every major system on the boat is going to need attention.

So stick around.

Let the suffering begin… haha.

At The Yacht Rigger, several of us live on boats. In fact, multiple team members call their boats home. It’s definitely a big part of our lifestyle.

My wife, our two sons, and I have lived aboard our Leopard 43 for the past five years or so. She’s been an incredible boat for us, but the kids aren’t getting any smaller, and we need a little more room.

This Leopard 48 popped up on YachtWorld. She’s certainly going to be a massive project if we move forward with the purchase, but it could be our opportunity to afford a much larger boat while bringing a very neglected and abandoned vessel back to life.

Follow along as I share videos from this adventure, along with our usual content featuring boat projects, upgrades, and life around the yard. This series is definitely going to require the skills and specialties of nearly every team member here at The Yacht Rigger.

Guys, this stuff isn’t easy.

So many angles to make work… and keep it all strong enough for offshore conditions.

and making progress on this articulating stern platform.

I really can’t wait to see how well this custom folding stern platform turns out.

The fab team is working hard to bring this one together. Lots of tricky geometry involved… Finished product coming soon.

Work on boats they said.
It’ll be glamorous they said.

😜

Logan from our East Coast team in St Augustine had to do some work in this hidey hole last week…
On his “workiversary” too!

Shout out to all the team members for all the hard work, often in difficult circumstances.
