Modern BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi and VW models lean hard on their batteries to power electronics, start-stop systems and control modules, even while parked. A weak battery often shows up as slow cranking, warning lights or odd electrical glitches before it fails completely.

Two quick tips:
• Most car batteries last about 3 to 5 years. If yours is in that range, have it tested.
• On many BMW and Mercedes-Benz models, a new battery needs to be registered to the car so the charging system adapts to it. Skipping that step can shorten the new battery's life.

German car fact: many BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche automatics leave the factory with "lifetime" transmission fluid. But "lifetime" doesn't mean the fluid lasts forever. Over time it breaks down, and that can show up as harsh or delayed shifts, slipping, or a shudder.

Weekend tip for European car owners: not all coolant is the same.

BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi and VW each specify their own coolant type. Topping off with a generic jug from the shelf, or mixing types, can water down the protection your cooling system was designed for.

Quick check this weekend (engine cold only):
• Is the level between MIN and MAX on the expansion tank?
• Does the coolant look clean, not rusty or sludgy?
• Any sweet smell or drips under the front of the car?

If you find yourself topping off often, something is likely leaking. Worth a look before it turns into overheating.
