Nothing like showing up to a dealership for a Pre Purchase Inspection just to find out the car was already sold. 💀😂

Meanwhile, I’m standing there ready to inspect a car that apparently has a new owner.

If you’re buying a used car, always confirm with the dealership that the vehicle is still available before your inspection appointment. You’d be surprised how often communication gets lost between departments.

And when you do find the right car, don’t skip the PPI! An independent inspection can uncover mechanical issues, previous repairs, hidden damage, and other concerns before you commit to buying.

Buying a used car in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs? Garage On The Go provides mobile Pre Purchase Inspections at dealerships and private seller locations.

I’ve always felt that technicians are the most valuable people in a dealership or repair shop, and I don’t think they get nearly enough credit for it.

A good technician could transition into parts or become a service advisor without too much trouble. They already understand the vehicles, the repairs, the diagnostic process, and what it actually takes to get the job done.

But you can’t just take someone from the parts counter or service desk and put them in a bay tomorrow expecting them to diagnose and repair vehicles.

That’s not to say parts employees or service advisors aren’t important. Good ones are absolutely essential to a successful shop.

But the amount of knowledge, experience, and skill required to be a competent automotive technician is seriously undervalued in this industry.

Without technicians, there’s no work to sell, no repairs to complete, and ultimately no service department.

I think it’s about time the industry started treating technicians like the backbone of the business that they are.

Apparently my camera roll is just steering wheels and whatever problems are hiding behind them. 😂

Different cars every day, and somehow I never get tired of it.

One of my favorite things about doing PPIs is getting to experience so many different vehicles. Some are amazing, some are questionable, but there’s always something interesting.

This custom lifted Jeep was absolutely ridiculous, in the best way possible. 😂

Seriously, such a nice build. Unfortunately, after taking some measurements, the customer realized it wasn’t even going to fit in his garage.

We also found a small leak from the front differential cover and noticed some wobble above 55 mph. With a lift this extreme, some changes in how it drives aren’t exactly surprising, although the wobble is a bit concerning.

I guess that’s what happens when you want to daily drive a monster truck. 😂

Sometimes the biggest dealbreaker during a PPI isn’t even mechanical. It’s realizing your dream Jeep is too tall for your garage.

There’s nothing more expensive than a cheap Audi. 😂

This one was a pretty good reminder of why that saying exists.

Oil leaks, a cracked grille, a cracked taillight lens, loud tapping at idle, and enough fault codes stored in the system to keep someone busy for a while.

Individually, some of these issues might not seem like a big deal, but start adding everything up and that cheap Audi can get expensive real quick.

I’m all for finding a good deal, but sometimes the cheapest car ends up costing you the most.

This is one of those cars that checked out beautifully during the inspection. Mechanically, there really wasn’t much to complain about.

But once we started looking closely at the exterior, we found subtle evidence of previous paintwork along one side of the vehicle. Nothing that immediately jumps out at you, and honestly, most people probably wouldn’t notice it.

The interesting part? The Carfax showed no reported accidents.

Now, that doesn’t automatically mean the car was in an accident or that someone is hiding something. Paintwork can happen for plenty of reasons. But it’s still something I’d want to know about before spending my money.

A clean Carfax is great, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. That’s why we inspect the actual car, not just its history report.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of installing coilovers, especially on older Hondas. 😂

There’s just something satisfying about working on cars like this RD1 CR-V. Simple, straightforward, and always fun to see how much a good suspension setup can change the way a car looks and feels.

I’ve always had a soft spot for this era of Honda, so jobs like these never really feel like work.

Only 56,000 miles on this Nissan Maxima, but you definitely wouldn’t guess that by looking at it. 😅

For its age, this thing is in pretty rough shape. Between the overall condition and the number of fluid leaks we found, it’s a good reminder that low mileage doesn’t always mean a better car.

I’d much rather see a vehicle with higher mileage that’s been properly maintained than one with low mileage that’s been neglected.

Mileage is just one piece of the puzzle. How a car was maintained and treated over the years matters just as much, if not more.

Don’t let a low number on the odometer convince you you’re getting a good car.

I know I post this logo a lot, but I really do love it. 😂

It just feels like us. I can’t really explain it any better than that.

Garage On The Go is still nowhere near where I want it to be. We’ve had so many ideas, some we’ve recently been able to bring to life, and others we’re still working toward.

It’s pretty cool looking back at where we started and seeing how much has changed. Especially knowing there’s still so much more to do.

NEW METHOD DROPPED. Apparently we’re Photoshopping Carfax reports now. 😭

A client booked a PPI and sent me a copy of the Carfax provided by the seller. It showed 85,000 miles and no accidents.

I always pull my own Carfax, regardless of what the seller provides.

Same VIN. Completely different story.

The report I pulled showed 231,000 miles AND an accident on record.

That’s a 146,000 mile discrepancy. 💀

I’ve seen some creative ways to misrepresent a used car, but potentially Photoshopping a Carfax is a new one for me.

This is exactly why you verify everything independently before handing over your money.

Would you have even thought to question a Carfax sent directly by the seller?
