Here’s a short list of things that drive me crazy. I don’t like being called boss or boss man. I understand it is with good intentions and when it’s said it is meant to be respectful but I don’t see myself that way. I don’t want to be a boss. Boss’s in my experience lead with fear or the fear of consequences. I do my best to lead otherwise. When we hire someone one of the things I always say is “I will never ask you to do something that I won’t do”. I hate sitting at a desk. I’d rather be in the ditch doing my best to work harder than any of my guys. Mainly to prove I still can lol, which is getting harder. I got into this to be the guy in the ditch, it’s what I love! The other one that drives me crazy is..... well crazy isn’t the word for it but I can’t come up with a word for the feeling is “must be nice”. That one oh that one. Must be nice having toys, must be nice traveling, or must be nice being able to be able to afford for your son to play tournament baseball. I actually had someone who will remain nameless say to me today “it must be nice not having to be punched in by 8” as I was grabbing a breakfast burrito at K*m & Go (btw their queen burrito is da bomb). He was correct I hadn’t been to the shop yet. I so badly wanted to say must be nice to sleep at night, be home by 6 every night, not have to reheat your meals most nights, not get phone calls from your wife in the middle of the night because she hasn’t seen you for a few days, not have to panic shop for Xmas because you’ve been running so hard you forgot the days and weeks leading up to it, being able to plan outside of the ten day forecast, being able to ride in the same vehicle as your family to family functions instead of driving separate in your wrecker, miss holidays, birthdays, anniversaries. Ricki Tapp can tell you there are many times I dream for a normal 40 hour week. No phone ringing at all hours of the night even hers does now. What we do is a very thankless job. I know we chose it, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s not only my profession it’s farmers, lineman, police, emt’s these day even your cable guy gets called out when your channel not coming in is an inconvenience. But please please drop the phrase “must be nice” because we all want to say it at 3 am when you are cozy in your bed and we’re out battling an ice storm. It’s almost 1am and I’m staring at a computer making sure our guys have what they need to keep them safe for them and their families. Bed sounds good, it must be nice! Sorry for my rant please keep all emergency workers in your thoughts and prayers this holiday season!!!!!
