Catalytic converter theft has not gone away.
This Toyota Sequoia came to our Shoreline shop after both front catalytic converters had been cut out and stolen.
And the converters were not the only things missing.
One downstream oxygen sensor had disappeared with them.
That is one reason converter theft can become such an expensive repair. Thieves are trying to remove parts quickly, not carefully disassemble the exhaust system.
Depending on the vehicle, the damage can involve converters, oxygen sensors, cut pipes, wiring, hardware and additional exhaust work.
There are ways to make theft harder, including converter shields or cages, alarms, marking the converter and choosing more visible parking when possible.
None is a guarantee.
The goal is to make the vehicle a more difficult target.
