Congratulations to Bonnie Bratton and Less deGraffenried (507 Colorado Street) for being awarded July Yard of the Month from Smithville Garden Club. They are truly an inspiration for all gardeners! They have removed thirsty grass and planted beautiful drought tolerant natives in their front yard and all along the acre of paths going down to the Colorado river.
Four years ago they acquired the old Watson house built 1947 and completely remodeled it.
Bonnie has lived in Alpine, El Paso and Austin so knew she wanted a xeriscape.garden. She started by putting cardboard down and wood chips on top of it to get rid of the grass She put gravel in areas where she planned to plant cacti. Her goal was to have a garden that attracted butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. She did research to learn what native plants are best for Smithville . She is just delighted with all the birds and her 3 year old grandson loves watching all the nature. Their property has a beautiful path that goes to the Colorado river where they have a paddle boat. They have huge old pecan trees and have planted several trees including apple, peach and Mexican plumb.

Garden Club Officers working yesterday to put a plan in place for September through May meetings. We will be having some wonderful speakers, interesting pilgrimages and lots of food and fun. We will continue to focus on keeping our community beautiful year round 🌸🌼🪻🌻💐🪻🌹🌺
