D-Day
D-Day is June 6 on the National Day Calendar and we are honoring those who fought on the beaches of Normandy, France. This historical day is a reminder of the day troops of Allied forces staged one of the most pivotal attacks against Germany during World War II.

The Battle of Normandy was executed under the codename Operation Overlord and became known as the beginning of the end of World War II. The Battle took place was along a 50 mile stretch of beaches, including Utah and Omaha Beach. While many explanations exist for the name, many believe the word "Day" means nothing more the countdown of the Day and hour of the assault.

The U.S., Britain, and Canada sent more than 160,000 Allied troops under the leadership of General Dwight Eisenhower. The troops manned more than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft the day of the initial landing and is considered one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history.

An amphibious military operation requires the use of naval ships to project ground and air power at a designated landing beach. Due to the sheer numbers of troops, ships, and aircraft involved, Operation Overlord required extensive planning. The Battle of Normandy liberated Northern France, but more importantly, began the liberation of millions of people across Europe.

Message to the troops of Normandy: “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.”

Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, 1944

NATIONAL MOONSHINE DAY
On June 5 we toast National Moonshine Day to recognize a beverage with a notorious record of blurring the lines of history and the law, turning ordinary men (and women) into criminals, and common criminals into legends. Follow along as we discuss how the history is just as strong as the drink.

Traditionally, moonshine is an illegally distilled whiskey spirit mostly made from a corn mash and typically produced by an individual illegally without a permit. Also known as white lightning, mountain dew, homebrew, hillbilly pop, and rotgut, moonshine has served as a means for people to acquire liquor and make a living.

5 Moonshine Trivia Ideas
Shepherd was Uncle Jesse's CB handle on the Dukes of Hazzard. Sweet Tillie was the name of his Ford LTD/Galaxie in the first episode - his moonshine runner.

The X's on the moonshine jugs symbol represents the number of times a batch was run through the still. If marked ###, the moonshine is pure alcohol.

What do Esther Clark, Edna Giard, Stella Beloumant, Mary Wazeniak all have in common? They were all bootleggers. Bootlegging was an equal opportunity profession.

Lavinia Gilman was a bootlegger, too. At 80 years old, she ran a 300 gallon still in Montana. The judge suspected her son was the real culprit, though.

During prohibition, there were many ways to transport bootlegged moonshine. Faking a funeral was a convenient ruse to move the product. Out of respect for the dead, of course, those with the badge were reluctant to stop a funeral procession.

LEAVE THE OFFICE EARLY DAY
Mark your calendars because June 2 is National Leave the Office Early Day. This quirky National Day is intended to be an incentive to those who often work more than 40 hours each week. We are reminding you to take a little time for yourself every once in a while.

About a third of Americans work more than 40 hours per week. Some work even more than that. Those who are self-employed or who work two jobs, likely work 60-80 hours per week. Those types of hours don't leave much for family, self-care, or home maintenance. Stress piles up and so do the phone calls from mom, the grandkids, and maybe the gym wondering where you've been. It's time to get yourself away from your desk and make the most of your time.

We're not encouraging people to ditch responsibilities from work. We're simply recommending you take some time for yourself if you can. If you are able to get away, make the most of your time and enjoy every moment.

NATIONAL GAME SHOW DAY
Today is June 1 and National Game Show Day on the National Day Calendar and we are celebrating all timeless game shows, past and present. National Game Show Day honors one of the oldest and most cherished genres of TV.

Game Shows are watched by millions of Americans every single day and are a staple in most American homes. Viewers can engage by cheering contestants on and playing along from home. National Game Show Day honors vintage and current game shows, their hosts, and the fans of yesterday and today.

Game shows are a specific genre of television where contestants compete, answer questions, or solve puzzles to win prizes. Prizes consist of cash, trips, and some of the most popular consumer products, including electronics, cars, and appliances.

The first TV game show in the U.S. was Truth or Consequences, which began in 1940 and was hosted by Ralph Edwards. The show consisted of contestants being asked to answer trivia questions correctly or face the consequences by performing a zany stunt.

NATIONAL SMILE DAY | MAY 31
It's May 31 and National Smile Day! Today we are encouraging everyone to wear their best smile!

The first recorded smile on record took place on 126 B.C. Okay, we made that up. But did you smile? Joking aside, we generate a smile when funny things happen or find pleasure in the things we do. Someone we love or enjoy spending time with may be the cause of a grin or beaming look of joy.

Smiles are powerful! They not only create engagement between two people but the more a person smiles, the healthier their brain can be. Smiling has a direct link to our brain and can help to reduce stress.

There is so much a smile can do. Just one smile can brighten someone's day. It can also improve your day. Smiles are infectious. A healthy smile can develop confidence and generate a new outlook on the world.

NATIONAL PAPERCLIP DAY
National Paperclip Day on May 29 celebrates a small but handy invention. Yes, even the paperclip has its own day of honor. This quirky National Day celebrates the well-known piece of curved wire that keeps our papers together and helps us stay organized.

While many may have claimed earlier invention of the paperclip, according to the Early Office Museum, Samuel B. Fay received the first patent for a "bent wire paper clip" in the United States in 1867. The original intention of Fay’s clip was to attach tickets to fabric. However, U.S. patent 64,088 recognized that paperclips could also hold papers together.

As many as 50 others received patents for similar designs before 1899. One other notable name receiving a patent for his paperclip design in the United States was Erlman J. Wright in 1877. At that time, he advertised his clip for use in fastening newspapers.

The Gem paperclip, which was most likely in production in Britain in the early 1870s by The Gem Manufacturing Company, was never patented. However, it is the most common type of wire paperclip we still use today. In 1904, Cushman & Denison registered a trademark for The "Gem" name in connection with paperclips.

5 Other Uses of Paper Clips:
Replace a zipper tab
Unclog a spray bottle
Unclog a single-serve coffee maker
Hem holder
Emergency hooks for broken necklaces

NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY
National Hamburger Day on May 28th wraps up National Burger Month and also ushers in the summer grilling season.

Hamburger. Seasoned ground beef, grilled, and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. We even top them with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, or cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Any of these combinations create a modern American version of a hamburger.

The world's largest hamburger was 2,566 lb - 9 oz and achieved in Pilsting, Germany, on 9 July 2017.

Much controversy surrounds the origin of the hamburger. However, it most likely first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.
