AIAG Milestones | Today, let us look back at a milestone that helped bring greater consistency to problem-solving and root-cause analysis across the automotive industry.
Before standardized problem-solving guidance, quality issues were often addressed differently across suppliers, plants, and OEMs. This created inconsistencies in how root causes were identified, containment was managed, and corrective actions were implemented, which often led to recurring failures.
As vehicles became more complex and manufacturing timelines tightened, the automotive industry recognized the need for a more structured, disciplined approach to solving problems. It was no longer enough to rely on quick fixes or simple operator retraining to address systemic issues.
To help address this challenge, AIAG collaborated with OEMs and suppliers to establish more aligned problem-solving practices through guidance such as CQI-20, the Effective Problem Solving Guide.
Rather than simply treating symptoms or jumping to immediate conclusions, these efforts helped organizations strengthen how they define issues, analyze root causes, verify corrective actions, and share lessons learned across their operations.
This work also helped reinforce stronger connections between problem solving and broader manufacturing systems involving APQP, PFMEA, control plans, and daily shop-floor management.
Today, many of the structured problem-solving practices used across the automotive industry continue to reflect these collaborative efforts to improve quality, prevent repeat issues, and drive continuous improvement across complex manufacturing environments.
