AIAG Milestones | Today, let us look back at a milestone that helped bring greater consistency to problem-solving and root-cause analysis across the automotive industry.

Before standardized problem-solving guidance, quality issues were often addressed differently across suppliers, plants, and OEMs. This created inconsistencies in how root causes were identified, containment was managed, and corrective actions were implemented, which often led to recurring failures.

As vehicles became more complex and manufacturing timelines tightened, the automotive industry recognized the need for a more structured, disciplined approach to solving problems. It was no longer enough to rely on quick fixes or simple operator retraining to address systemic issues.

To help address this challenge, AIAG collaborated with OEMs and suppliers to establish more aligned problem-solving practices through guidance such as CQI-20, the Effective Problem Solving Guide.

Rather than simply treating symptoms or jumping to immediate conclusions, these efforts helped organizations strengthen how they define issues, analyze root causes, verify corrective actions, and share lessons learned across their operations.

This work also helped reinforce stronger connections between problem solving and broader manufacturing systems involving APQP, PFMEA, control plans, and daily shop-floor management.

Today, many of the structured problem-solving practices used across the automotive industry continue to reflect these collaborative efforts to improve quality, prevent repeat issues, and drive continuous improvement across complex manufacturing environments.

Registration is now open for the 2026 Small Business Supplier Summit!

Taking place August 19-20, 2026 in Huntsville, AL, this event is designed for small and mid-sized automotive suppliers who want clearer direction, strong connections, and practical strategies to grow in a rapidly shifting landscape.

Attendees will not only hear directly from OEMs and industry leaders — but also from the voices that often don’t get enough airtime at larger conferences: small business success stories and real world operators who’ve scaled.

Small business suppliers will get:
Insights from OEM priorities and expectations
Guidance on financing and access to capital
Clear updates on tariff and legislative shifts to watch
Networking with industry peers

If larger industry events have felt out of reach or not quite relevant to your day-to-day reality, this summit was created with that gap in mind.

AIAG Decoded | Today, let's decode Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ).

A defect rarely costs just the price of the defective part.

In reality, one quality issue can trigger a chain reaction of costs throughout an organization.

Cost of Poor Quality (CoPQ) refers to the hidden and visible costs that occur when products, processes, or services fail to meet requirements.

Examples of CoPQ can include:

▶ Scrap and rework
▶ Production downtime
▶ Sorting and containment activities
▶ Expedited shipments
▶ Additional inspections
▶ Customer complaints
▶ Warranty claims

For example, a process variation may result in a single nonconforming part. But the true cost often extends far beyond the part itself—requiring investigation, containment, revalidation, additional labor, lost capacity, and corrective actions.

That is why organizations increasingly focus on prevention rather than correction.

Tools such as PFMEA, Control Plans, APQP, and robust risk analysis help teams identify potential failures earlier, reducing the likelihood that quality issues become costly business problems.

AIAG understands that reducing Cost of Poor Quality starts with identifying and addressing risk before it reaches production, the customer, or the field. That is why we provide industry-developed training and resources designed to help quality professionals strengthen risk analysis, improve process controls, and drive more effective decision-making.
