(413) 736-3111 The DPW consists of one administrative division and six operational divisions.

The operational divisions are: Engineering, Fleet Management, Solid Waste, Storm Drains, Streets Services, and Traffic. Each one of these divisions, through its normal course of business, contributes to the vibrancy of the City. The Engineering division provides project management and construction management services for major city design and construction projects; water resources engineering for

EPA Stormwater permit compliance, flood protection, dams and drainage systems; pavement management; right of way permits; and manages the plans of the city’s infrastructure. The Fleet Maintenance division supports the department’s operational divisions, as well as, the City’s motor fleet (excluding the Police and Fire departments) by providing vehicle and equipment safety and emission inspections, repairs and maintenance. The Solid Waste division provides a curbside collection of rubbish, recycling material, yard waste and bulk items to approximately 43,000 residential units in addition to 1,700 small businesses, apartment complexes and condominiums. The Streets Services division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of City’s 1,100 lane miles of roadways and 600 miles of sidewalks, as well as, snow and ice operations. The Storm Drain division maintains an estimated 14,000 catch basins, 5,000 manholes, 325 outfalls, 24 separate drainage basins, and miles of storm drainage pipe of various sizes throughout the City. The Traffic division is responsible for the City’s 200 signalized intersection, 180 miles of pavement markings, regulatory transportation and street name signage.

The City of Springfield welcomes the 4th Annual Ironman this Sunday, June 7, 2026!!!

This weekend, the City of Springfield, along with numerous other Western Mass. communities, welcome the Ironman to the City of Springfield. Residents and visitors should be aware of impacts / closure of various roadways throughout the City, especially on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

1. The staging area for the event will begin on Saturday, June 6, 2026 and will be on the first floor of the I-91 South garage under route 91. The event will utilize the first level with the second level open for parking for other downtown events such as graduations, etc.

2. Hall of Fame Avenue (West Columbus Ave.) will be closed from the Memorial Bridge to State Street for all of Sunday.

3. Hall of Fame Avenue (West Columbus Ave.) will have the right lane closed from State Street to the South End Bridge.

4. East Columbus Avenue will be closed south of Main Street to the I-91 north on-ramp near the south end bridge. Access from the bridge to I-91 north and south will not be impacted.

5. Main Street between State Street and Harrison Ave. / Boland Way will be closed for the day.

6. The I-91 northbound exit ramp to Longhill Street will be closed for the day

For the run portion of the event, runners will be in the right lane of Hall of Fame Ave., then transition to Longhill Street at the intersection of Main St., East and West Columbus Ave. Police will be stationed at that intersection to properly direct runners and drivers to safely traverse through the intersection.

7. Runners will be in the right lane (west side) of Longhill Street and then transition to the east side of Longhill Street at its intersection with Sumner Avenue. Police will be stationed at that intersection to properly direct runners and drivers to safely traverse through the intersection. The right lane on Longhill Street northbound will be closed.

8. The runners will then transition into Forest Park, run within the park, then onto Park Drive, Converse St. (Longmeadow), Porter Lake Drive, then onto Dickenson Street, Trafton Road then into Forest Park----then through the park, and eventually back to Longhill Street at the Washington Blvd. entrance---and back to downtown in the reverse direction.

9. The runners will run in Hall of Fame Ave. to State Street then transition to East Columbus Ave, then to Court Street, where the Finish Line will be located.

10. Court Street will be closed Saturday and Sunday.

11. East Columbus Avenue from State Street to Boland Way will be closed on Sunday.

12. All routes for the bikers / runners will have cones, barrels, barricades, etc. and there will be significant police support along the entire course.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the City Council accepted the annual award of Chapter 90 funds from the State to the City of Springfield in the amount of $5,019,060.65 for Fiscal Year 2027.

The use of the $5 million within the DPW is attached. Also attached is a list of the streets proposed for paving under our Fiscal Year 2027 paving contract that will start in June +/-. The total amount of the contract is proposed to be $6.5 million.

Attention Residents

The City of Springfield will restart our Fiscal Year 2026 paving program beginning March 30, 2026, weather permitting.

The list below shows the tentative scheduling moving through the spring / early summer

With regards to our Fiscal Year 2027 Paving Program, we have recently received notification from MassDOT and the Governor's Office that the City of Springfield will be receiving our annual Chapter 90 allotment in the amount of $5.019 million. With these funds and additional funds awarded from the State, the total target for the FY27 paving program is $6.5 million. Now that the funds are set we will be finalizing our paving list in the next few weeks. The acceptance of the funds from the State and approval of our paving list will be in front of the City Council in April 2026.

Our bid will be prepared and we would anticipate a start of work for the FY2027 program in early / mid-June 2026.

Based upon current weather forecasts, the Department of Public Works is tentatively setting the start date for yard waste collection for Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
Your yard waste will be collected that same day as your recycling so please plan accordingly. Yard waste will continue throughout the year up until early December. The rules and regulation for yard waste collection can be located here https://www.springfield-ma.gov/dpw/yard-waste

As a reminder, leaf bags that have been left out all winter will need to be re-bagged---there are a lot of them out there so do not be surprised when they are not collected.

The DPW will also be placing compost in the parking lot of Smead Arena for City residents, as we do every year. The date for placing the compost has not been set yet but will most likely start mid to late April.

Between yesterday and today, we have received a number of calls from residents who did not put their trash out because they "googled" if trash collection was going to be delayed due to the storm on Monday, and the AI response stated that trash is being delayed by one day.

100% MISINFORMATION!!!!

If trash is ever delayed it will be posted on out page, website and also through the Mayor's Office of Communication.

*****Please be aware that when you try to google a statement like "Is Springfield's trash delayed?" you get the answer shown on the picture---that response is for Springfield, Missouri---not Springfield, Massachusetts! There are 50+ Springfield's in the United States---so please google correctly!

Due to the impending large snowstorm, the City of Springfield will be enforcing a citywide parking ban beginning at 7:00 pm, Sunday, February 22, 2026. At this point the ban will stay on indefinitely.

The DPW and the Police will be aggressively ticketing and towing vehicles during the storm and after the storm

The parking ban regulations are as follows:

No parking on the even side of the street from 7:00 p.m. -7:00 a.m.

No parking on the odd side of the street from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

On behalf of the Department of Public Works and the Springfield Police Department we thank you for your cooperation and assistance with this matter, you will be notified as soon as the parking ban concludes for this storm.
