The Yamaha R6 arrived in 1999 and immediately made a rather persuasive argument that 600cc was all anyone really needed. It wasn't the biggest, the loudest, or even the easiest thing to ride. It simply got on with the business of being brilliantly engineered.
For over two decades it chased redlines, won races, humbled egos, and taught generations of riders that speed was never just about horsepower—it was about precision. The R6 asked something of its rider, and when you got it right, it rewarded you with one of motorcycling's finest conversations.
Now it quietly bows out, not because it stopped being good, but because the world changed around it.
That's rather sad, really.
Still, if a motorcycle can be judged by the number of people who'll insist, years from now, "They don't make them like the R6 anymore," then I'd say its run since 1999 was an extraordinary success.
