Across our communities, the next generation of volunteer firefighters is already stepping up. Still, volunteer fire departments are facing a shortage of members.

Steven Bauer, a physics teacher at St. Marys Area High School and a 30-year member of the Crystal Fire Department, is one example of how many volunteers are going above and beyond to help recruit new volunteers.

“I’ve been in the department for over 30 years. About 8 years ago, I started working with the local high school to get students more involved with the community. Now, we’re helping students who want to volunteer get trained in the first few modules while they're in high school so they can become firefighters.”

Morris Township Volunteer Fire Company also has a unique program that gives students an early look at service, responsibility, and what it means to show up for their community.

Joshua, 16, and Tucker, 14, are Junior Firefighters at Morris Township. They run drills, spend time at the station, and have already started completing training modules.

In the last 20 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has dropped 90% in PA. Let's make sure the next 20 years are different! Reach out to your local fire department today and ask about how you can start volunteering to help your community!

Community support plays a critical role in sustaining volunteer fire departments, helping ensure they have the equipment, training, and resources needed to respond to emergencies. Through initiatives like Fuel the Cause, local departments are able to continue providing essential services to their communities.

Jessie, a third-generation volunteer at Penfield Fire Department, explains the impact of fundraiser support on daily operations. “Fuel the Cause helps us in helping our community. The funds we receive helps us buy new equipment, make sure there’s fuel in our trucks.”

Dave, Penfield’s captain, says that support reaches every part of the department. “Whenever we get a donation, it helps with every aspect of the department.” He emphasizes the ongoing responsibility of maintaining readiness and responding to calls when needed.

Steven from Crystal Fire Department adds perspective on the cost of equipment and operations. “The gear we’re waiting for costs thousands of dollars; a new fire engine is a million dollars or more.” He explains that consistent community support is what allows departments to keep pace with those demands.

Together, they highlight what that support turns into: equipment, training, and the ability to respond when the call comes in.
