Stockton is heading into a stretch of extreme heat this week, with highs pushing toward 98°F Tuesday and Wednesday. Here's what that means for your boat, and what to check before you head out:

Check your engine cooling system regularly. Summer heat pushes engines harder, and low water flow or a clogged raw water strainer can lead to overheating fast, especially during peak afternoon runs. A quick strainer check before you head out saves a lot of trouble.

Watch your fuel and ethanol levels closely. Hot weather accelerates fuel degradation, and ethanol-blended fuel absorbs more moisture in summer humidity. Top off with fresh fuel often and avoid letting tanks sit half-full for long stretches.

Inspect your bilge pump and battery before every trip. Heat accelerates battery drain, and a bilge pump or battery that's been quietly failing tends to reveal itself at the worst possible moment. A five-minute check now is worth it.

Protect your upholstery and canvas from UV damage. Constant sun exposure during a heat wave fades and cracks vinyl and fabric faster than any other time of year. Regular cleaning with a marine-safe UV protectant keeps seats and covers from prematurely wearing out.

Time your trips around the heat. Early mornings or evenings are safer and more comfortable than midday, especially with temperatures this high — and it means less traffic and calmer water too.
