Hello everyone,
It has been a long few weeks, filled with many unanswered phone calls and emails. The Governor filed two emergency rule changes in regard to driver ed. The basics of which will allow us to conduct the classroom portion remotely and a change to the observation time rule. The driving portion has been left unchanged.
As far as the remote class goes, this can not be confused with “online”. The classes have to be conducted live, we need to have a scheduled time and need to follow all of the rules as though it was done in a classroom. The state has offered no guidance on this, no preferred platform to use, no usable curriculum, no help whatsoever. That being said, we began the process of putting this together, we are hoping to have things ready to begin late next week or at the very latest early the following week. I would only ask for patience with this process, it is as new to us as it is to you. We are allowed by state law to do up to 6 hours of class a week. Once we get started, I will look at perhaps doing three, two-hour classes a week to get caught up and get you all through the classroom portion of the program quicker.
The second part of the rule change was made to the six hour observation time requirement. This is the six hours your student is required to sit in the back seat and observe another student driving. This along with the driving time has historically been documented and kept by us, per the State of NH rules. This requirement is obviously not conducive to “social distancing”. With that in mind, the new rule allows for the student to do the observation time with a parent/guardian with a valid driver’s license . This time will need to be documented and signed off on by a parent/guardian and given to me to attach to the rest of the paperwork needed. There has been no form provided by the state for this so I will create one and get it to you all soon.
As far as the driving portion of the program is concerned, we are still on hold. As much as I and presumably all of you would like to get this over with, common sense tells us that’s a pretty poor idea. There has also been no declaration that we are an essential business, so even if we were foolish enough to do it, we are not allowed to. My plan is to get the classroom and observation portions out of the way and once we get the go ahead, get all of the driving done.
Once I get the remote class figured out I will be in touch again with the details. Thank you all for your patience, stay healthy and I look forward to finally getting going again.
Thank you,
Craig Munroe
