Wow, Johnny Morris bought Islander Resort...

🎣 FIRST CHEECA LODGE. NOW ISLANDER RESORT—A NEW CHAPTER FOR TWO ISLAMORADA LANDMARKS! 🌴
_____________

Two familiar resorts. Generations of memories. And a $500,000 commitment to help preserve our local history. 🐚

, founded by , has officially announced a partnership with Schulte Hospitality Group to bring and together, alongside Store & Marina.

For those of us who have driven past that unmistakable Islander Resort sign for years, attended a wedding there, or spent an afternoon along its beach, this news hits close to home.

And one detail deserves attention: Morris, Bass Pro Shops, Darryl Schulte, and other donors have committed $500,000 to the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center at Islander Resort. That’s support for keeping our stories alive. 📚

Islander Resort has a story of its own. Chicago attorney and fisherman Leo Samuels opened it in 1951. David Curry took ownership in 1999, updating the property while preserving its character.

Today, the 24-acre oceanfront resort celebrates 75 years, following a major renovation in 2025. 🌴

Morris’s connection to also goes back decades. At 16, he caught his first on a fly while fishing with his father and a captain out of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina. 🎣

In 1972, he started selling tackle from eight square feet in his father’s Missouri liquor store. That small beginning grew into Bass Pro Shops, boats, restaurants, and outdoor destinations such as .

Here in the Keys, World Wide Sportsman became part of that story when founders George Hommell Jr. and Billy Pate joined forces with Morris and Bass Pro.

This summer’s Cheeca Lodge acquisition included the Casitas and properties, with and the Beach Café & Bar. Now, the Islander Resort partnership adds another chapter to that growing local presence. 🌅

So what comes next?

Both resorts will remain open and continue normal operations during the transition. Islander Resort’s current manager, Joy Michelle Boyd, will lead both properties under Debbie Bennett, president of Bass Pro’s nature-based hospitality division.

The partners say they intend to enhance the resorts while retaining their character and working alongside many existing team members. World Wide Sportsman’s marina will serve as a departure point for guests’ fishing and outdoor adventures. 🛥️

Detailed improvement plans and financial terms have not been announced.

For our community, the interest is personal: what will the next chapter look like for places that already hold so many memories?

💬 What year did you first visit—or move to—Islamorada?

🚨 FAKE FEDERAL JURY NOTICES ARE REACHING FLORIDA KEYS RESIDENTS—DON’T LET AN ARREST THREAT TALK YOU INTO HANDING YOUR MONEY TO A STRANGER ⚠️
______________

An official-looking notice does not make a money demand legitimate. Before you pay anyone, stop and check.

The Sheriff’s Office issued an October 8 warning after a resident received fake notices through regular mail and email claiming they had missed federal in .

The paperwork included false sheriff’s information and even the wrong courthouse address. 📬

The threat behind this is simple: pay now or face arrest. Scammers impersonate officials and demand or , hoping fear will keep you from asking questions.

A badge number, a convincing voice or an official-looking letter is not proof you owe money. Neither is the name or number showing on your caller ID—those can be faked.

Before sending a dollar, do your own checking: 🔎

• Ask for the caller’s name, agency, department and reference number. Write down their callback number, but don’t assume it is legitimate.

• Tell them you’ll verify the matter and call back. Then hang up. Someone insisting you stay on the phone or threatening you for checking is waving a major red flag.

• Search for the agency yourself. Open its official website and use the published main number—not the number the caller gave you. Skip sponsored search results and watch for look-alike websites.

• Call the real sheriff’s office, court, bank or business they claim to represent. Ask whether the person works there and whether the demand is genuine.

• Search the caller’s number and wording of the message alongside “scam.” Reports can help, but finding no complaints does not prove it is safe.

• Don’t click unexpected links, scan payment codes or share passwords, verification codes or .

Our sheriff’s office does not administer federal jury duty or collect money for federal agencies. For federal jury questions, start at flsd.uscourts.gov.

Here in the , we need to take seriously. Don’t accept a stranger’s word at face value. Slow down, do your and verify independently. 🛑

If you already paid, contact your bank or payment provider immediately and report it to law enforcement. Acting quickly matters.

🕯️ A WOMAN’S BODY WAS FOUND ABOARD A DERELICT BOAT NEAR KEY WEST—AN ANONYMOUS CALL AND UNANSWERED QUESTIONS LEFT A MYSTERY THAT LASTED 27 YEARS 🧬
___________

A derelict cabin cruiser was floating about 150 yards north of near when authorities received an anonymous call on September 29, 1999. A woman’s body was aboard the boat—and the caller claimed to be her boyfriend.

He told authorities she had been suicidal. Her remains were so badly decomposed that investigators couldn’t recognize her, and fingerprints failed to identify her.

A possible overdose involving amphetamines and alcohol was suspected. Su***de was considered a possibility, but the account released with her identification does not establish a definitive manner of death. ⚖️

Even her name was missing. For 27 years, investigators knew her only as “Cinnamon.”

Now, that mystery has an answer: Cumie Doylene McCutcheon.

For those of us who remember the in 1999, think about everything that has changed since then. Through all those years, this woman’s identity remained unresolved.

Investigators had estimated she was between 35 and 45 when she was found. They entered her case into a national database of missing and unidentified people, but the answers never came.

Then, in 2026, the , Sheriff’s Office and county Medical Examiner’s Office brought forensic evidence to Othram, a specialized laboratory in Texas. 🔬

Its scientists developed a detailed profile. FDLE investigators used to search for family connections, building leads they could investigate.

That work finally led to McCutcheon’s identification, announced October 7. 🧬

Her identity is now established, even as questions surrounding her death remain in this .

Still, after nearly three decades, a woman found on our local waters is no longer known only by a nickname.

Her name was Cumie Doylene McCutcheon. 🕯️
______________

📌 UPDATE — OCTOBER 11, 2026

Several readers have asked about her family and what brought her to the Keys.

Authorities say McCutcheon was 56 when she died. Investigators contacted her son, whose DNA sample confirmed her identity. His involvement is confirmed, but the public announcement does not specify when formal family notification occurred or which other relatives were notified.

We have not found verified public information about her hometown, where her family lives, or when and why she came to the Keys.

The original October 1, 1999, Miami Herald report stated that the initial autopsy and investigation found no signs of foul play. That finding does not establish a definitive manner of death.

🏰 TREASURE VILLAGE MONTESSORI’S CASTLE: GOLD, SHIPWRECKS, SHOPS… AND SCHOOL DAYS
______________

The castle at once needed a walk-in steel vault for its valuables. And visitors could pay $10 to put on a diving helmet and explore a Spanish shipwreck. 💰

Now we drop our kids off there.

That familiar landmark has quite a story—and school days are only its latest chapter.

It started with Art “Silver Bar” McKee, a pioneering treasure diver who kept bringing pieces of the past home from the sea.

In the late 1930s, fishing guide Reggie Roberts showed him cannons and ballast stones offshore. McKee found coins, including a gold piece dated 1721.

He wrote to Spain’s archives to find out what he’d stumbled upon. The documents connected the wreck to the Spanish treasure fleet torn apart by a hurricane along our reefs in 1733. ⚓

By 1949, McKee had opened a sunken-treasure museum at nearby . But the artifacts kept coming. His collection needed more room.

So, in the early 1950s, McKee’s fortress took shape beside , with local builder Alonzo Cothron involved in construction.

Those medieval-style battlements made motorists look twice. Inside, a walk-in steel vault secured the valuables. Outside, cannons and anchors announced that this was no ordinary roadside stop.

Visitors came face-to-face with coins, jewelry, silver bars and centuries-old ship timbers recovered from . The roughly 40-foot tower, called the “keep,” offered views toward the Atlantic and Florida Bay. Even the pond-like water out front has a story: it’s a natural tidal estuary. 🏰

And McKee’s adventures weren’t confined to display cases.

His glass-bottom boat carried sightseers to a wreck. For $10, some donned his helmet and explored underwater while someone pumped air down from the surface.

Try topping that vacation story.

Eventually, the property turned another page. Treasure Village’s galleries and artisan shops filled the spaces around its open courtyard. Neighbors browsed where visitors had once admired sunken treasure.

Then local families saw another possibility. 📚

Parents and community members wanted tuition-free Montessori education close to home in the . Building on the earlier Montessori Island School program, they established Treasure Village Montessori as a public charter school in 1998, starting with 60 children in kindergarten through third grade.

The castle became its home.

Today, preschoolers through eighth-graders learn among gardens, courtyard playgrounds and outdoor classrooms on those same grounds.

That’s the beauty of this landmark: it kept finding a place in our lives.

Treasure museum. Village shops. Neighborhood school.

And through every chapter of , still “the castle.”

💬 Do you remember the museum or the shops?

🏝️⚠️ BALLAST KEY’S BUILDINGS GET A REPRIEVE—BUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT TO THE ISLAND RETREAT OF THE MAN KNOWN AS “MR. KEY WEST”
___________

West of , away from Duval Street and the traffic on U.S. 1, sits an island with a story many people driving through the have never heard.

was the private retreat of David Wolkowsky, the developer known as “Mr. Key West.” Now, a federal proposal to remove much of its infrastructure has been put on hold.

If you don’t recognize his name, you probably recognize the . Wolkowsky developed that waterfront hotel and helped turn Key West into the destination it is today.

But his island was where he could get away from it all. Friends and visiting celebrities gathered there, and playwright was part of his circle. It was a quieter corner of the colorful unfolding back in town. 🌴

Wolkowsky also had a future in mind for the place: protect it and use it for research and education.

After his death, his estate donated the island through The Nature Conservancy to the federal government in 2019. What had been a private getaway became part of a larger effort. 🌿

Then the storms took their toll.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates repairing the island’s structures would cost approximately $9.23 million. Its demolition proposal would have removed other infrastructure while keeping the main house, wooden pier and wildlife-refuge sign.

On October 8, the agency confirmed that the current demolition bid solicitation had been canceled. Officials are still reviewing what should be removed, and another solicitation is expected after that work is completed. ⚠️

That gives Ballast Key some breathing room. It doesn’t guarantee restoration.

For those of us who care about , this is a tough question: how much of a place do we preserve when the repairs cost millions—and how could those buildings serve the island’s future?

The next chapter of this unusual story is still unwritten.

Should Ballast Key’s buildings be restored for research and education? 💬

🌅🇺🇸 BEFORE THE SUNSET PHOTOS, THERE WERE TRAINS—WHY THE OLD SEVEN MILE BRIDGE IS BECOMING PART OF AMERICA’S 250TH CELEBRATION
________________

Most of us have crossed the more times than we can count. But looking over at the old bridge, it’s easy to forget what it took to build that connection—and how much it changed life here.

This Saturday, October 10, our community will gather on the for a sunset celebration marking America’s 250th anniversary. The setting has a story of its own. 🌅

Long before the highway, ’s Overseas Railroad reached in 1912. During construction, more than 400 workers lived on , the little island beneath the bridge.

They had a post office, a commissary and even a one-room school. What we now look down on from the highway was once a working village helping build a railroad across the ocean. 🚂

Then came the devastating 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The railroad was damaged beyond recovery, but its bridges gave the Keys another way forward.

Florida purchased the railway right-of-way and converted the crossings for cars. By 1938, people could drive from Miami to Key West without boarding a ferry.

And here’s something you might not have noticed: railroad rails were reused as guardrails on the old bridge.

For those who remember driving across that narrow crossing, the view probably comes with a few white-knuckle memories, too.

The modern bridge replaced it in 1982. But the old bridge stayed part of our lives—a place to walk, look across the water and remember an earlier .

That local connection is what this year’s celebrations are meant to highlight. approved a series of gatherings linking the nation’s anniversary with our own history, culture and community.

Saturday’s free event in runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. There will be music from the Pierce August Band, Caribbean-inspired appetizers prepared by ’s Culinary Team and a sunset toast featuring juices. 🎶

There’s no parking at the bridge. The county lists trolley access from 7 Mile Marina and van service from the 33rd Street/Stanley Switlik parking area.

An evening on that bridge is a chance to enjoy where we live—and remember the people who helped connect it.
