FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY – PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS
If you are thinking about driving tonight — don’t. Conditions across Grand Traverse
County are becoming life-threatening.
Grand Traverse County Emergency Management, in coordination with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, Michigan State Police Traverse City Post, Grand Traverse County Road Commission, and other public safety agencies are strongly urging residents to stay off the roads tonight.
A Winter Storm Warning for Grand Traverse County remains in effect.
Severe winter storm conditions continue to adversely affect the county:
• Nearly 3 feet of snow has already fallen in some areas
• Wind gusts of 40–50 mph are creating heavy blowing and drifting snow
• Darkness is setting in, making travel even more dangerous
• Wind chills are dropping below zero
Many roads are becoming more impassable due to deep snow drifts.
If you choose to travel tonight and become stranded, emergency responders may be severely delayed reaching you.
For your safety and the safety of first responders, please stay home and continue to ride out the remainder of this storm.
Roads crews will continue clearing operations overnight and into the morning as conditions allow for personnel to do so safely. Please give them time to open roads and improve driving conditions before attempting to travel tomorrow.
Grand Traverse County Emergency Management and our public safety partners continue to monitor conditions and coordinate response operations.
