FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY – PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS

If you are thinking about driving tonight — don’t. Conditions across Grand Traverse
County are becoming life-threatening.

Grand Traverse County Emergency Management, in coordination with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, Michigan State Police Traverse City Post, Grand Traverse County Road Commission, and other public safety agencies are strongly urging residents to stay off the roads tonight.

A Winter Storm Warning for Grand Traverse County remains in effect.
Severe winter storm conditions continue to adversely affect the county:
• Nearly 3 feet of snow has already fallen in some areas
• Wind gusts of 40–50 mph are creating heavy blowing and drifting snow
• Darkness is setting in, making travel even more dangerous
• Wind chills are dropping below zero

Many roads are becoming more impassable due to deep snow drifts.

If you choose to travel tonight and become stranded, emergency responders may be severely delayed reaching you.

For your safety and the safety of first responders, please stay home and continue to ride out the remainder of this storm.

Roads crews will continue clearing operations overnight and into the morning as conditions allow for personnel to do so safely. Please give them time to open roads and improve driving conditions before attempting to travel tomorrow.

Grand Traverse County Emergency Management and our public safety partners continue to monitor conditions and coordinate response operations.

****WINTER STORM WARNING EXTENDED FOR GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY****

The NWS Ga***rd has extended the Winter Storm Warning for Grand Traverse County through Tuesday morning.

Please continue to avoid traveling if possible as even though the road commission has every plow and vehicle they have on the road, the winds and additional snowfall is creating challenging conditions to keep them clear.

Here is the latest from NWS: Lingering icing across parts of northern lower MI this morning transitions to snow area-wide today. Several inches of new snow likely through tonight, heaviest across parts of the eastern U.P. and northwest lower. Snow combined with strong winds will result in whiteouts at times, especially near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Additionally, strong winds in areas that received heavy icing will exacerbate tree damage and infrastructural impacts

Cold temperatures filter in to northern Michigan behind the major winter storm. Consequently, for those without power, dangerously cold temperatures are expected this afternoon through Tuesday night.

Scammers are posing as legitimate tow truck companies online, taking money from stranded drivers and leaving them without help, according to a local wrecker service owner who has seen multiple cases in recent weeks.

Meet Nathan! He's our featured pet of the week in Dave's Doghouse. Nathan is 1 year old. Nathan is new to shelter life so he's a little shy at first. He's looking for a quiet home that will let him take the world at his own pace. Once he gets comfortable, he wants nothing more than to cuddle with you. If you're interested in adopting this very sweet boy, please call the Cherryland Humane Society at 231 946-5116.
