This is one of the most important steps of the entire engine build. One tooth off can turn into a no start, poor performance, or even bent valves, so this is where patience really matters. 😅

💡 VQ Tips:

✅ Bring cylinder #1 to Top Dead Center before installing the chains.

🎨 Match every colored chain link with the correct timing mark before releasing the tensioners.

👀 Double and triple check everything before sealing the front cover. Five extra minutes now can save you hours of tearing the engine back apart. 😂

🔄 Rotate the engine by hand two full revolutions to make sure everything moves smoothly. Don’t worry if the colored links don’t line up again, that’s completely normal after the engine rotates.

Removing the gallery gaskets on this VQ engine. 🔧

Did you know the gallery gaskets are one of the most important sealing components inside many VQ engines? Their job is to keep engine oil flowing through the internal oil passages at the correct pressure, ensuring critical components like the crankshaft, connecting rods, camshafts, and timing system receive proper lubrication.

Over time, the factory paper gaskets can become brittle, crack, or fail. When that happens, oil pressure drops, especially once the engine reaches operating temperature. Low oil pressure may not be obvious at first, but it can lead to accelerated wear on bearings, timing components, and even catastrophic engine damage if left unaddressed.

Replacing the gallery gaskets is considered preventive maintenance on many VQ engines. Although it requires significant disassembly, installing the updated metal-backed gaskets helps restore proper oil pressure and greatly improves long-term reliability.

This is one of those repairs that isn’t just about fixing a leak. It’s about protecting the heart of the engine and ensuring it continues to perform the way Nissan engineered it to.
