Vehicle: 2013 Chevrolet Impala
Damage: Front Bumper Cover, Hood, Passenger Front Fender
Turn-around time: Two Days
Cost: $1,200.00
This one came in with damage to the front bumper, hood and passenger side front fender. Fortunately, the damage was superficial and only at the exterior panel level. A thorough tear down of the effected areas revealed no structural damage.
We were able to reuse most of the bumper and front end components (grilles, brackets, lights, etc.), which saved the customer money, however, we did replace the front bumper cover with a new one. The estimated labor cost to repair the old cover exceeded the new part cost.
The hood and fender were also replaced with new parts for the same reasons. We prefer to salvage and repair the original parts whenever possible, as it typically provides the best part fitment and color match, but sometimes it's just not economical.
The Chevrolet Impala is a popular and economical vehicle with relatively simplistic design features so new replacement and used O.E.M. parts tend to be cheaper and readily available than some other vehicles. This particular generation of the Impala was produced for many years and in large quantities.
Limited production vehicles, special packages, higher trim levels or complex designs typically increase production costs on new replacement parts, which can increase demand for already scarce quality O.E.M. parts due to the limited numbers produced. Typically we look to repair those types of parts, but that's not the case here.
Black is a basic but beautiful color on cars and while it can highlight any flaw in the finish, it does color match to the existing panels well in non-metallic varieties. Matching the color, sheen and texture of the existing paint and clear coat can be difficult as vehicles age because they are typically covered in contaminants and superficial scratches from years of exposure. Some tactful paint blending, wet sanding and buffing on the existing adjacent panels will get a satisfactory result.
With some thoughtful planning we were able to complete our tear down, salvage of parts for reuse and painting of the new parts in the same day. We baked the newly painted parts with infrared lamps and let them cure overnight before reassembling the next day.
After some careful machine polishing, a once over with a special flash light that simulates outdoor sunny conditions and a thorough car wash, this one is back on the road! We even had some extra time to polish up those old headlights, nice and clear.
