I lied a while back to you all. I said my race car never broke down and never left me stranded half of that's true because it didn't leave me stranded I had my truck to tow it home but it did break down and it was my own fault.
I was pushing close to 600 horsepower launching at around 5,000 RPMs on extended 4 lug axles with wheel spacers which is a big No-No.
One particular drag launch at Sonoma County raceway in California and about 30 ft off the line my lug nuts sheared right at the axle fl**ge. luckily my tire went straight out and not up into the quarter panel and I came to a grinding halt on the track.
After that I decided to beef up the rear end and after inspecting the stock 9 inch third member I saw something that doesn't happen very often look at the third member pinion shaft is cracked right in the top that's pretty darn rare and that shows you I was throwing way too much horsepower at that stock 9 in third member.
Check out that Curry track 9 third member and check out how much more meat and metal is around that pinion shaft and that rear end could have easily can handled over a thousand horsepower, and it did.
I ended up running Moser 35 spline racing axles and I spooled 9" rear end. My once daily driver when I was 19 was an official race car, and it was time to put some big boy parts on it.
As you can see in the last picture in this series big boy parts aren't cheap. I think that was close to two grand just for that third member before axles and all the other stuff.
