Hennessey built its reputation by pursuing extraordinary speed. The new Blackbird measures performance differently.
The Texas-built hypercar combines an all-new, naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 developed with Ilmor Engineering, a six-speed gated manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Hennessey is targeting 800-850 horsepower, more than 9,000 rpm, a dry weight below 3,000 pounds and a top speed of 220 mph.
Inspired by the Lockheed SR-71, the Blackbird features active vertical stabilizers that deploy at 71 mph, aerospace-led surfacing and a diamond-shaped quad exhaust influenced by the Bell X-1. Inside, there are no visible screens or digital gauges - only an analog tachometer, physical controls and the exposed manual shift mechanism.
Limited to 71 examples and priced from $2.5 million before taxes, the Blackbird is expected to enter customer production in 2029-2030.
The Speed Journal examines why Hennessey’s latest hypercar may be most significant not for the numbers it produces, but for the analog experience it is designed to preserve.
