Dear Left Lane Interstate Driver,
We see you.
Cruising peacefully in the left lane, probably listening to Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen (that song is 🔥 🔥 🔥 BTW) just really soaking in every note on a beautiful Illinois summer afternoon.
Meanwhile, a line of vehicles has formed behind you that can now be seen from low Earth orbit.
What's that? A semi-truck just passed you on the right?
No worries. The vibes just keep vibing.
We just wanted to offer a friendly reminder that on Illinois interstates, the left lane is generally intended for passing. If you're just out there enjoying the scenery, contemplating life, or trying to win that hypothetical debate in your mind, the right lane is a wonderful place to do that.
Now, is this our top enforcement priority? Not even remotely.
Is it something that causes everyday drivers to stare at their windshield and mutter things we'd rather not repeat on Facebook? Absolutely.
Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/11-701) generally requires drivers on interstates and controlled-access freeways to use the left lane for overtaking and passing, with exceptions for things like traffic congestion, weather conditions, moving over for emergency vehicles, and certain highway designs.
So, to our beloved Left Lane Cruiser: we say this with all the affection of someone listening to their Uncle Steve talk about his leather pants collection at a family reunion.
Pass when you need to pass. Move over when you're done. Let traffic flow.
With Love and Gratitude,
Your fellow motorists, and Uncle Steve.
